I see you got the adapter discs all right, Ian. Hope your new cams work great!

Thanks Chris, I hope folks can see the sense in evolving their wbx.

Ian

I shall decline your kind offer of removing the gear, thank you. My Dremel worked a treat - the rivets are quite soft.

How do I proceed with a purchase? Will you PM me some payment instructions?

Good job. Not everyone is so confident or has a Dremel!
I will pm you with my details from work tomorrow.

You might like to invest in something similar to this to set your cam timing accurately, if you dont have one in your tools arsenal:

I bought this mahoosive 9" steel one from the USA for $30 off ebay. I think that Kent Cams do a smaller plastic one for occasional use.
You will of course need a DTI clock and a means to mount the timing wheel securely onto the crankshaft.

Dremel time!

A little heads up that you WILL need to relieve the back of the oil pump idler gear spigot, to clear the heads of the camwheel adaptor bolts. It looks to be around 2-3mm. Either that or once you are happy with the cam timing, get the relevant three holes spotfaced but this may weaken the adaptor.

I have tried both the std wbx 26mm oil pump and a Schadek 30mm, exactly the same in both cases.

Clarifying pic to follow..

Umm, you do know that the pump style you use must match the camshaft hub type?:
Short-reach pre-71 pump for 3-bolt camshafts.
Long-reach post-71 pumps for 4-rivet dished-hub camshafts.

You said you tried fitting the stock wbx pump, that means you're trying to fit the proverbial square peg in the round hole. Gotta choose the pump to match the cam.

I will post a pic when I get home. The pump only needs a tickle to clear the 3 x UNC screw heads.

Ok so my lack of Aircooled knowledge shows through...
Having ground a scallop in the back of the idler gear boss, shortened the driven gear boss and ground a bit off the drive tang it did actually clear.
Worth the effort though? Maybe not.
Chris have you ever considered a 3/32" or 1/8" spacer under the pump flange to make the later pumps fit? The ports still seem to line up ok.

What are we saying then - if I'm not up to modifying my existing pump do I need a different one?

The one I'd bought already was a 'heavy duty' 30mm version. I believe there are already clearance issues with the engine cradle with this pump, so a spacer isn't going to work I think.

Is one of these the equivalent for this camshaft?

It looks like the 1.9DG that I'm planning to sell on when the 2.1 goes in will get the benefit of a new heavy duty oil pump.
