I'm not sure that a 3-4w (~0.3A) saving's
that significant in the grand scheme of things.

I like that....yes a little white and you can see the individual LEDS but it's not bad at all...those 50:50's are very bright...a piece of tracing paper (grease proof oven paper) might diffuse and warm things a slightly.

To be honest the individual leds are probably more pronounced than the camera shows. I'm still pleased but I'll give the grease proof paper a go later as you suggest

Have to admit, I don't think I ever felt ours needed to be brighter. One striplight on was usually fine, even to read by.

I think the flourescents in ours were particularly yellow and dim compared to most

You can diffuse the light from leds a little by roughening the lens with sandpaper.

Lol I guess not but every little counts

and it was a straight swap ready made led tube no mods required

Well they're a boat light supplier and there's the "Voltage range 10 - 30 volts DC"
That's what I went on anyway

I popped one of the £25 LED tubes in, very happy with the results. Whilst I'd like to get all 3 done, it's quite a lot of money that I'm not sure I need to spend. I think in most circumstances just one tube switched on is good enough.

Was the multimeter pic with the battery charging (engine running/hookup), or just 12v?
0.22A @ 12v = 2.6W
0.22A @ 14v = 3.1W
Not bad.
