alot of american bays ran 2litre type 4 cj engines and some people mangle cu engines in with some tin wear and heat exchanger mods when the cj gives up the ghost.
i didnt realise they wer so scarce,ive 4 cu engines...

Here's the update....

Gearbox is now knackered.

New one needed. No time to source and to fit before our holiday.

Totally gutted. Guess we have to get out the tent.

Andyvan has sorted me right out with a gearbox for £250.

Away in the tent on Monday, so the van will be done for our return.

Wow. Has it been this long!!

What a summer.

So I got the second hand engine from eBay, got the gearbox from AndyVan.

Got it all fitted by CTC engineers in Crawley. Top guys! Only deal with old stuff, and rapidly becoming popular with old VW owners. If your in the south east these guys know what they're doing (and are older than the vehicle). Guy who is part owner has a Bug and a Bay, and goes to all the events. So you're dealing with someone who loves these things and knows them.

Anyway..... They took pity on me and kept the costs down by doing the lot including a new clutch, and switching all the good bits from each engine to make one decent one, when they had time in between other jobs. But we could only afford so much.

So we missed the summer.

However it's now up and running and sounding much quieter. I now have a 2.0 CU engine in my garage to strip down and find out how it all works.

Of course (this is a VW camper van after all) that's not the end is it.

I now have these issues.......

- No heating as it was on all the time. Apparently pods are knackered. Is this an easy job? I see they are £60 each from vw heritage.
- smell of petrol when I fill it up. Comes and goes. No staining underneath and emanates from the front under the cab. No sign of rust around the cap. All fuel lines in place and tight (all new). One idea is the top of the fuel tank could be rusty.
- fuel gauge is very dodgy. Depends on incline of road etc. Is this normal?

Any advice appreciated.

I'm off to change the seal on the lid put in some more Lino, and give it a wash. I'll post some pics if I get a chance.

with the greatest respect, anyone can remove and re-fit these engines as a one man task, just using a pair of axle stands and a trolley jack.

there seems to be an over-emphasis on the difficulties involved, when in fact it is a very simple job.

And it is incredibly so much easier with a crane! I certainly have difficulty with my arthritis without. So not 'anyone' can do it without.

Smell of petrol from the cab could be a rusty fuel tank.Top of the fuel tank collects dirt & moisture then starts corrosion.Only way to check is drop the tank done this job to diesel&petrol T25s.Replace fuel lines coming off the tank same time.

You'll find it will read from empty to over quarter full on ever hill. Absolutely normal.

Remove the pods completely and use some high-temp silicone ducting to join the heat exchangers to the rest of the system. In the winter you'll need the heating on full all the time anyway.

I have no doubt anyone can remove and refit and engine.

It's "time" you need.

If you've got a week, with nothing else on, then your probably onto a winner. Also things like engine cranes are essential (CTC lent me theirs so I could haul the old one out of my x5 at home).

Your chances of breaking something else are also greatly reduced.

Today is a great case in point.

Looking for a drain of the battery. After some research with a multimeter, turns out it's the rubbish old alarm system. Unfortunately disconnecting it from the battery also disconnects the ignition.

That was a few hours of my Saturday gone. And now I've got a dashboard removal ahead of me to extract the alarm system.

I like the idea of the bodge fix for the pods, but would kinda like it done and dusted properly for next summer.
