Here's the update....

Gearbox is now knackered.

New one needed. No time to source and to fit before our holiday.

Totally gutted. Guess we have to get out the tent.

End of story :cry:

Hold on a minute... The gearbox was fine and the engine dead. Is the new engine in already? What's the problem with the gearbox?

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Andyvan has sorted me right out with a gearbox for £250.

Away in the tent on Monday, so the van will be done for our return.

Fingers crossed!!!

UPDATE.....

Wow. Has it been this long!!

What a summer.

So I got the second hand engine from eBay, got the gearbox from AndyVan.

Got it all fitted by CTC engineers in Crawley. Top guys! Only deal with old stuff, and rapidly becoming popular with old VW owners. If your in the south east these guys know what they're doing (and are older than the vehicle). Guy who is part owner has a Bug and a Bay, and goes to all the events. So you're dealing with someone who loves these things and knows them.

Anyway..... They took pity on me and kept the costs down by doing the lot including a new clutch, and switching all the good bits from each engine to make one decent one, when they had time in between other jobs. But we could only afford so much.

So we missed the summer.

However it's now up and running and sounding much quieter. I now have a 2.0 CU engine in my garage to strip down and find out how it all works.

Of course (this is a VW camper van after all) that's not the end is it.

I now have these issues.......

- No heating as it was on all the time. Apparently pods are knackered. Is this an easy job? I see they are £60 each from vw heritage.
- smell of petrol when I fill it up. Comes and goes. No staining underneath and emanates from the front under the cab. No sign of rust around the cap. All fuel lines in place and tight (all new). One idea is the top of the fuel tank could be rusty.
- fuel gauge is very dodgy. Depends on incline of road etc. Is this normal?

Any advice appreciated.

I'm off to change the seal on the lid put in some more Lino, and give it a wash. I'll post some pics if I get a chance.

T25Convert wrote:Hi,

I went down the same route as you (a cheapo 2nd hand unit for £350).

I checked comprssion (good) and saw it running (good) saw it revving (good) and saw no smoke (also good).

However, when I ran it up to temperature in my van I found it had poor oil pressure (oil light on) and it smokes like the marloborough man.

Having said that, Its doing as a runner whilst I rebuild my old one, which was knackered. Having been through the same process I'd second your choice, plus you have the fun of a rebuild, which is what I'm up to now.

If you've not fitted one of these before I'd reccommned an engine crane, makes it a one man task. Also, if you get a bit of wood (2" by 3") and wedge it so it goes into the training arms and under the gearbox, you can lower THE box onto it and itr sits at the right angle to pop the engine back onto later... Top tip from the wiki!

Good luck,

Alex
with the greatest respect, anyone can remove and re-fit these engines as a one man task, just using a pair of axle stands and a trolley jack.

there seems to be an over-emphasis on the difficulties involved, when in fact it is a very simple job. :D

And it is incredibly so much easier with a crane! I certainly have difficulty with my arthritis without. So not 'anyone' can do it without. :D

Smell of petrol from the cab could be a rusty fuel tank.Top of the fuel tank collects dirt & moisture then starts corrosion.Only way to check is drop the tank done this job to diesel&petrol T25s.Replace fuel lines coming off the tank same time.

You'll find it will read from empty to over quarter full on ever hill. Absolutely normal.

No heating as it was on all the time. Apparently pods are knackered. Is this an easy job? I see they are £60 each from vw heritage.

Remove the pods completely and use some high-temp silicone ducting to join the heat exchangers to the rest of the system. In the winter you'll need the heating on full all the time anyway. :wink:

I have no doubt anyone can remove and refit and engine.

It's "time" you need.

If you've got a week, with nothing else on, then your probably onto a winner. Also things like engine cranes are essential (CTC lent me theirs so I could haul the old one out of my x5 at home).

Your chances of breaking something else are also greatly reduced.

Today is a great case in point.

Looking for a drain of the battery. After some research with a multimeter, turns out it's the rubbish old alarm system. Unfortunately disconnecting it from the battery also disconnects the ignition.

That was a few hours of my Saturday gone. And now I've got a dashboard removal ahead of me to extract the alarm system.

Thanks for the advice on the other bits guys.

Fuel tank removal it is.

I like the idea of the bodge fix for the pods, but would kinda like it done and dusted properly for next summer.

Hello,

Glad to hear of your progress....

When you drop the fuel tank....(mine is off right now :roll: )..

You will want to fit this....

http://www.serial-kombi.com/en-GB/trans ... 92-n310396" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Probably this:

http://www.serial-kombi.com/en-GB/trans ... 92-n310388" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

One of these (the right size :wink: )

http://www.serial-kombi.com/en-GB/trans ... 992-n34293" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and last but not least... the bush on the gear linkage.... you'll see why... :roll:

http://www.serial-kombi.com/en-GB/trans ... 987-n31936" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Also 1 metre of 2 flexy fuel pipe sizes..

Guess what I've just ordered this week..... :rofl :rofl :rofl

Cordialement,

:ok
