Had them, not from amazon but from GSF, and they are cheap crap Topran mirrors. The mirror will stay in one place for a while before flopping around, tightening will work for another while, as will rubbing the spindle with emery paper and all the other sand in grease solutions, eventually the internal spindle and spring will eventually rust solid and the glass will soon rattle and vibrate in the plastic housing which is very annoying and the glass will discolour. And this is not even mentioning about the paint flaking off the metal base due to the cheap chinese pig alloy oxidising. Rubbing down and respraying will last for another 6 months before it happens again.
Hagus mirrors @ around £25 (though not without flaws these days it would seem) are the best option if persevering with postage stamp sized standard mirrors. Due to their better housing and glass build quality (though there have been reports that the tightening springs and spindle in them are not as good as they used to be)
Also if you can get convex mirrors (JK still sell them.....)

Sorry. As I said above, the quality of Hagus mirrors is currently poor. I have bought two sets in the past year and all of them flopped down because the tension springs are much thinner than the original specification. I sent one set back to Brickwerks asking them to return them to Hagus pointing out this fault. I then put in the thicker tension springs from an old set of mirrors to a new set of Hagus and now the mirrors stay where they should - even at 74mph (I was going downhill at the time).

I know. Hence I referenced it
Believe me, a poor Hagus mirror is better than the crap ones @ £8
No Faggie VW don't sell them as Hagus were the OEM supplier.......I think

Got the mirror off the door, 10mm nut and spring off, can't for the life of me get the plate and mirror arm apart to get to the ball. Am I missing something?
Thanks for any advice.

It doesn't sound like you have standard mirrors. Put a photo up. Once the nut and tension spring on a standard mirror are removed it just comes apart.
If you have floppy mirrors, did you tighten the nut up on the tension spring first to see if that cured your problem?

They usually just fall apart in your hands. Refit it without the spring and nut and waggle it about

and it should fall apart. Or clamp bracket in a vice and do it ( will mess up any paint/coating though this way).

Original (I'm guessing) Hagus.

Not these, were a bit corroded inside so may be a problem.
I have tightened the nuts as much as possible, definitely 'better' so will see if that solves the problem, otherwise OG I'll give your nuts out waggle it about method a go

and try the sand and grease.
