Well decided to skip the welding today, taped up the recent repairs
Image
you dont have to tape it but it is neater and looks better and its just nice to see good metal not rusty tin
Image
Image
the inner bit of the front arch has also been covered, this will be dynax'd after paint
Image
then spent the rest of the afternoon stripping out the rest of the body and glass ready for painting next week , most of the van is very very good but its several different shades and as red is one of the worst for fading were goiung to do the lot.. while were at it.

Great work as always mate. First time I have seen the use of tape over welds though.

Aye kev and everytime I see a thread with reference to 'slight seam rust' in this area i know what the reality is you are prepared to dig to the bottom of it

Well os step.not the worst by a long way nor the best but
Image
its better in many cases to repair rather than replace and in repairing you can use the correct steel also the van retains more authenticity and originality, some may laugh now but in another 20 years this will be a relevant and pertinent point,
so taped of the area i want to remove
Image
no more, no less, just past the rusty area is sufficient
Image
this is the iffy  bit
Image
the idea will be to replace in 2 parts as the original was
this is the underside and you can see how good it is, i would note here that the vw sealant finnished just on this curve and was not present on the underside of the step ? anyhow its scraped off and i will weld to the left(inner) part first
Image
too shiny to see clearly but i have stepped the part so it will fit under the next part to be fitted
Image
this shows it joined underneath ,
Image
I will then mark the line correctly and cut this part so it is neat and the correct width and then add the last part. had to knock off ealy as i had the mum of all migrains that is just wearing off

That looked in good nick compared to mine, mine has started to rust around one of the holes that the rubber mat clips into :(
