I like that caravelle. Top money for a caravelle but on the face of it a much better buy Cooper.
One point were round light standard on 2.1's in 86, or is it a 1.9 with a 2.1 upgrade, if so, was box also changed'? Anyone asked?

An example of how diff locks work. On the first run Dave did not have any difflocks on, but got them engaged and made the climb.

Mal in his blue window van had rear difflock on and it was easy.

Have you checked the insurance for a 9 seater imported minibus. My bet is it'll cost way more than for a camper..... Also it won't be registered as a motor caravan when it gets it UK plates, so you'll have to go through that malarky when you get the inside kitted out. Not a major hassle but another thing to be aware of

As for it being do-able in a day to save hotel fees.... That's one hell of a long day - 2 hour check in at airport, fly out, hang around at passport control, get to dealership, check van thoroughly, get plates, start driving with around 500 miles ahead in an unknown and potentially unreliable van.

Rather your Dad than me to be honest. The drive isn't the bad bit (although it could be tedious at 1.6D speeds) but it's all the waiting around either side. Me, I'd want a night in a hotel, pick van up next day and a stop over on the way home.

What i was going to do was take the seats out and convert into a camper then register with the dvla.

IIRC you can get either 14 or 28 day "export plates" which will give you basic 3rd party cover throughout EU. You will need (or I would certainly want) decent fully comp cover when you get it back to this island of thieving scumbags, regardless of when you intend to re- register it. I think it's a lot easier to re reg from German plates before they have expired, but I may be wrong.

Both the seller and the buyer have to visit the office to get the correct papers and plates for export. Be careful if the seller just puts the 5 Day "Movement plates" on for you as these are only valid in Germany and I'm pretty sure you have to have additional insurance on these as it's not included in the price.

Working seat belts define the number of "insureable seats" so to speak AFAIK. Take two out. I had to ditch the 8th jump seat on the SA to keep the brokers happy.

Slow down Cooper, if you haven't got locking diffs (or at least one) you're going to have to get all the associated vaccuum pipes etc and fit them to work a decoupler.

And, without opening up a huge can of worms here, I'd suggest you put the money to a re-furbed VCU instead
