I may have asked this question before but can't find an answer.
what soap should you use for wet sanding??

Cheap washing up liquid.

I've heard people say washing liquid contains salt, but I suppose a couple of drops can't hurt.

You don't leave it wet for long. The soap is purely to break up the powdered paint and stop it clogging the abrasive. I wouldn't actually wash my van in it no, but its fine for this job.

Just to let folks know that I was able to ge hold of VW Medium Blue LH5G

for Avenue Coatings. Just PM me if they cant find it on their system.

Once I get the mechanics sorted, I'm gonna have a go at this. So to start prepping I've bought and watched the dvd several times, and bought some small tins of what I think I'll use (after searching through this post and vast amounts of online pics), so I can have a practice first.
However, one thing I've not found anywhere on here or in the DVD, is when you have an Aircooled like mine where the vents at the rear are metal and not removable, how the bl**dy hell do you paint inside them??

Please enlighten me

Get an aerosol of a similar colour in, say, acrylic. Spray at/into the vents first. The rustoleum won't react with the Acrylic but vice versa could be a problem. Just my opinion.

Thank you covkid for all the advice, after a year of having welding done. i have spent the last two months fillering and sanding i have never done any bodywork before and i must say i loved doing it this pic is after a lot of work


then i started to paint and so pleased i done it. almost ready for mot.



if anyone is nervous of trying it all i can say if i can do anyone can, and its great fun .

Just don't paint today. Today is a prime example of when NOT to paint - too much heat. Paint goes off in seconds causing stcky artex finish. Perfect for drying if yesterday had been cool though. Looks fab Hippy Chick. In general, the ladies usually make a better job of it as they tend to notice details.

hi guys little question which grade paper to rub down old paintwork I have bought 400 and 800 is the 800 to fine for first coat? many thanks in advance

Hi Ladybugsdad, i used a orbital sander to flat down the old paint but then went over with 600 sand paper, by running my hand over i could feel any high spots, after the first coat of paint i used wet and dry 600 but only rubbed the high spots and very lightly as the first coat is quite thin. Once you get going you will soon get a feel for it. i had never done anything like this but i found i learnt as i went along. Hope you get on ok jen
