I bought one once for £400, I wasn't impressed, it sat around for a bit, then I got rid. Objectively, they (a) get in the way when the tailgate's open (b) add weight to the vehicle (c) are big ugly things that rust (d) stress the body panels (I've seen warped panels with a properly fitted VW carrier). I rest my case !

(a) so do toolboxes and children
(b) so does a Paulchen and plastic tubes is plain tacky ..... Im surprised at you
(c) Paulchen are uglier and neither of my carriers have rusted
(d) no they dont

you have no case at all .....

A reply to all.

Nope armyphil helped me out with my camper he mentioned he wanted that type of carrier so I sold him it.

I'm glad I sold it as I need the cash for parts on the camper that are important.
+ the main reason is that it's to heavy and bulky.

So I'm going to look for a lighter one.

My spare is just chucked in the back at the moment. It's messy anyway.

The nessisory stuff I need to buy first. So selling off a lot of my stuff to fun things I need.

I have one of Syncronutz style ones and an Ortec. I prefer the Ortec.

The Nutz style are over engineered and I feel I have to be careful when I open it so I don't cause any damage to the van. The Ortec isn't as sturdy but does the job really well.

If I had to stand there and open and shut the wheel carrier 1000 times I would choose the Ortec.

Cooper, sure get any basic servicing and maintenance done, but one suggestion. But before diving into the rest, take a while to look around and see what your options are. Go to some VW shows. Just sling a campbed or something in there for now if you want to get away in it, and use a portable stove and coolbox. Its quite easy to rush into 'upgrading' a van and ruin it with hasty choices. You really don't need bullbars..

I have an ortec and I have opened it a thousand times...selling it now because my arm has fallen off and I don't need a spare because I don't get punctures often enough...5 magic beans and it's yours, you will need to collect because I can't lift it. If I win the bull bars off eBay I'm going put my spare on the front so it looks like a bay.
