The guy who rebuilt the bottom end seemed to know what he was doing so I suspect it's a pump/oil grade/airlock/similar issue rather than a lack of back-pressure. On a positive note, it sounds really sweet and left tappets that were a bit noisy on start-up have quietened. I have a timing gun on the way also but even lining up the alternator by ear gives me more power than previously. I am taking it easy on the pedal for the run-in but even so, the drive has improved. I have a bit of work to do with the oil but progress has been good...

Hours of fun, that oil pressure thread.

Oil pumps can be done in situ, though I have not done it, I seem to recall BigBadBob76 did his

Itchyfeets general advice is not to use a gasket on the oil pump, and if you want a proper read of an oil pump refurb thread try this one for a 412 engine https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewt ... 32#9006832

I found that thread before but I'm not sure I have that level of dedication. I'll try some easier options first. :D Some good tips there though. Does he grind on glass?

Yeah, dedication and admiration

The difference is that an oil pump for a WBX is obtainable off the shelf. For a original type 4 they are not#

..and yes, he does the grind on some special glass

Your pulley question in the WBX timing thread made me wonder what cam you have fitted.

What did you end up doing in the end ?

Forgot to mention the cam. I went with a +1 size gear from Classic Parts (025109023A)as a mid-range for both price and gear size. It worked out really well as it was a nice fit with no noticeable backlash. The guy who rebuilt the bottom end was really happy with it.

Still waiting on my 0-7Bar gauge from Germany so taking things slowly with the engine until I know where I am with oil pressure...

Must take a look at my carb. Can anyone confirm if this is a Solex 34 PICT?Image

Hmmm, I don't know and don't think that's what should be fitted either

Have a look on the side of the float chamber, it should say what it is on there.

................. as a DG engine

, however if you had a DF engine it might be one of these - 34 PICT 5, familiar ?

Expect a tirade of advice about changing the carb, and the inlet manifold

Looks like it is Carrera. Why not good?

DF engine is generally regarded as being woefully underpowered compared to a DG....... however those people don't read the torque graphs correctly.

The DF has almost as much pulling power as a DG, but doesn't breathe as easily so doesn't rev as high. This inability to breathe restricts top speed in particular compared to the DG.

Main differences between DF / DG are camshaft, heads, inlet manifold and carb. Like me you have a hybrid. In your case you have a DG cam and DG heads (IIRC). The fact you have this carb suggests you still have the DF inlet manifold - care to tell us the part number.

Swap the manifold and carb and you'll have a full fat DG (there may be some other little changes others can tell you about when fitting the Pierburg carb, probably coolant or electrical connection related).

I don't think you will notice much difference unless you use the extra revs available

Interesting earlier discussion here https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=164160

Thanks carrera. I know it's a thankless job being the bearer of bad news sometimes but it's much appreciated.

The manifold part number is 025 129 713 and it fits my DG heads. I also have the 025 129 713A manifold from my doner engine which sadly didn't come with a carb. My new cam is for a DG also.

Is this the carb I need by any chance?

Are you sure the last 4 digits are 713 ?

712 is the DF intake, 712A is the DG one, at least according to my copy of ETKA, but that may be the complete assembly rather than the bare manifold. https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/typ+ ... 129-24005/

That carb does look like it might be a Pierburg 2E3, which is the one for the DG.

Looks like you have all the bits to do a back to back test

Unfortunately that carb is just one I saw for sale a while ago when I was looking for an air box. Pretty sure about the part numbers. Here’s my manifold.

And here’s the one from my doner engine

Oh well, no carb then... but you have confirmation that you do have the DF intake bits.

Still, subject to you oil pressure tests it's running well, so lots of reasons to be happy

:ok
