have just ordered my paint from http://www.rustoleumdirect.co.uk and they (after a bit of haggling) are willing to offer 10% discount for 80-90 members -if there's any problems it has been authorized by Mark Bullock

Is great once you have a feel for it, the working time, and the mix. At times you near perfection, This time of year is perfect - beginning of April. Keep us posted:D

Hi, i've been practicing on my van roof, didn't soak roller long enough so got a load of bubbles, about how long at this time of year for the first coat to bake enough to sand down? It's had a couple od decent days of sun over the past week.

drying times. I'd suggest minimum of three weeks for sanding

It is so great you develop and share this things.
I read the topic and I want to buy a paint from rustoleum, but I am not really sure which I should pick? I want nice smooth shinny finish.
Which is type of paint is preferred:
1. SMOOTH metal paint
or
2. SATIN metal paint

Hi all just to let people know of my progress or more to the point findings with the rollering of my van, maybe it will help others?

I have done two doors rear and sliding using different techniques in respects of utalising the sponge high density roller on the rear and a mohair hair roller on the side door.
Without doubt the Mohair roller is better less bubbles a smoother finish ... so hoping less elbow grease when sanding down in between coats i should think.
Also used the dry brush technique for removing the roller marks ... works a treat.


When im ready il post pics but as iv only done a tester coat to determine which method im gona go with thres not much to show at atm.

Hi -wonder if you could give some advice to complete novices? Before applying the first coat of paint, when sanding down, can you use a sander? Also, as there will be differences in the paint texture, due to some bits being sanded off, will subsequent coats of paint even out this finish, with the flattening back process? When preparing the van for the first coat of paint do you wet and dry the whole lot?

Can use a sander, use a da sander or an orbital sander I would. I have used an orbital sander which achieved a good key and well flatted down paint for a first coat.

You want a smooth matt fnish - doesn't matter what it looks like visually as long as its flat and smooth. Anything that stands proud will be amplified with a gloss on it - as will dents. 95% is prep in almost any paint job.
