Maybe or it could be one with the rubber inner skirt

Dowty seals seal against the thread itself without a recess

That's true, it's the recess that would be the worry in this case though ....

Dowty's do NOT seal against the thread, they rely on the parallel and concentric face surfaces of the bolt's shoulder (also a controlled diameter) and the spot-face on the receiving part (in this case, the sump)

Any damage to either sealing surface and it will leak. Copper/asbestos washers won't help either. Been there, done the machining, put it right on many occasions.

Sounds like the sump needs to come off Rob!

sump plug on a syncro should be at the back and M16 though there are some anomalies out there I know
Rob is your van originally a petrol van that has been converted to diesel ?

Think it is, Aidan.

Or use a doughty washer.

Yes Aidan, as Ian says it was originally a petrol converted to a diesel. When I say the sump plug is on the front I mean towards the front of the vehicle, unlike my old diesel which was at the rear of the van.

Ian the flat face for the sealing is the bolt head from what I can see, and then there is a smaller circle which I would think goes inside the washer, which is the same circumference as the thread ie 15mm. Both the thread and washers inside circle are 15mm exactly, I have measured both with a vernier caliper.

Whats a doughty washer, is that the type Mark showed, metal ring with a rubber seal?

The PTFE tape seems to have done the trick for now, at least it will get me to the Gower this weekend, I can sort it out properly when I get back.
Rob.

In a word, yes. The step on the bolt and the steel part of the seal control the "nip" on the rubber so it doesn't get crushed.
