Are Aires also sometimes nice as well as cheap ? I got the impression, maybe falsely, that aires are v basic and without anything like play area etc.... Am I wrong?

Most aires are very basic, sometimes not much more than a parking area and a tap / toilet but some are in good locations and have a bit more to offer. I would also look at municipal sites, most towns will have one and some are very good and fairly cheap.

DFDS lines either Dover Calais or Dover Dunkirk. Should be the cheapest by far.
