All I can say is that I've worked on the entire v-dub line and despite VW refining the look, the fundamentals remained the same throughout and that applies to colour coding. For most of us, a faulty headlight, indicator or horn is the most we need to suss and thats certainly common to the earlier diagrams. I'm not convinced the end result of converting later schematics to early are really worth it when most of it is there anyway. On later vans they used more relays but they're relatively simple affairs anyway.
Myself, I use the earlier diagrams for the basics and just refer to the later ones for anything not covered (rare). Seems to work fine like that. I too despise the later ones but you do get used to it. After all, I can work in inches OR centmeters ok
