Gents, many many thanks for your help. £85 is a lot less than i feared. Is it a easyish job? (no i won't be attempting it myself) or is it a syncrospares job? I presume they or aiden would be the suppliers? Again thanks. Total tally is, two vans, three cars and a bike and all have sh@* the bed in the last month. Very Very grumpy.

Mr + sized surfer, changing the crown wheel and pinion is a specialist job. Its one of those jobs that you should replace everything else near it at the same time if you're going to do it properly. If Aidan is right, I cant see how the collapsed pinion bearing hasnt also jacked the final drive. I have a number in my head to repair/replace this, and its 6 or 7 times the number lready quoted. I hope its not for your sake busta. If it is, well we're all hear for morale support mate
P.S. Have you dropped either sump and looked for swarf etc and the condition of the gears?

You don't have a sump on your diff? Crazys.
No those photos are from my multivan. Again, it was just so mr surfer knew roughly what they should look like. But if there's no sump then he cant, and I look stupid!
Correct, no auto syncros exist afaik.

The pinion bearing is £85
the taking the box to bits, to assess the damage and report would be £140, after that who knows but figure on a from £720 price for a rebuild at the moment, parts are getting harder to find and VW's non standard sizes/specials are a pain when it comes to circlips and the like
oh booked up till middle of May at the mo here

Been speaking to Jon at syncrospares and him to Aidan. Its in the queue for a rebuild of the bits all round it to make it worth the effort. If it needs gearbox rebuild will probably get a longer forth put in it. Looking at may, so its a long wait. Getting cheezed of with this syncro lark as off road has always been nice but not essential but have been paying the price to keep it on the road. T4 lwb 2.5 ? hmmmmmm. Nowt i can do till the t25 is back on the road and fit to sell.

the trick is to try not to break them...
but its taken a lot of us a long time to learn that one
Oh! and have a spare box if you can, saves the wait
'tis worth it though, to be sure
