Interesting read and backs up my own thinking on tyres. As it happens, I dropped in to my favourite tyre place to ask about a set of new 8ply tyres for my tintop and the chief fitter walked around, scratched his head and asked "What you carrying then???". Bear in mind I drive a Caravelle with a light load and don't have tons of chipboard or a heavy roof to contend with.

He said he could get them but that 15" (I run 15" steel wheels) are getting harder to find in 8ply and hardly cheap - besides, he said it would work out a hell of a lot cheaper and still meet anything I'd throw at it if I fitted part-worn XL tyres. Sourcing four with good treads on all of them (two still had the bobbly bits on so were new) he gave me a blanket price of £100 for all four incl fitting. Said if I wore them out to come in for another set and if I added up the mileage I'd still be quids in compared to new 8 ply tyres which he felt were overkill for my needs. Seems reasonable to me.

I've got Goodyear van heavy duty van tyres on. Don't cut corners on tyres ever. It's not worth it. Your life depends on them. Better tyres also last longer than cheaper ones.

Not cutting any corners. Those tyres are just right. I drive a tin top and the only weight it has in it is me and my lad. If I drove a Westy with all the gubbins that'd be a different matter. Either way they're legal and up to the job. Just looked - Goodyear all round
