I would think more than twice about running a syncro as a sole vehicle and daily driver. Been there, done that and it's not all it's cracked up to be, despite the hype.
Ahmen brother. I have two full-time jobs. One as a gardener and one keeping my chuffing van going!
If your short you can modify a doka to fit a bed for two, and there is ample storage for a gas bottle and heater. Then there are always roof tents. A sorted doka will cost you £5-8k, but remember it will have done plenty of hard days work (mine and other members still do!).
I'm sure you've read every inch of this:

lloydy wrote:gearbox = on average £1000+
VC = £550-600 plus fitting
propshaft = £300
CVJ are about £45 each apart from front outers which are 3 times that
then all the bushes, balljoints ect
obviously it might not need all this.
I could afford the vc prop and cvj but not a gear box.

@ cooper your probally not going to like this much the fact is a good reliable syncro is probably out of your buget. you will be able to buy a syncro for your buget but you will need to spend on it to make it anything more than an unreliable old van.
i`ve seen people buy these vans cheap and thow 3 or 4 times what they paid for it on them.
i`ve seen people buy cheap vans. spend on them till there skint and then sell them of at a major loss.
my advise would be either be prepared to invest in the region of £7k for a reliable van or think of something else.
personally i`d get a huge loan. buy the best van you can find. it`ll probably cost you in the region of £12k but will have had £15k+ spent on it not including labour. and enjoy it right from the word go.
just work your t**S of for the next couple of years to pay the loan off.

I'd never put myself in debt to own any vehicle. Been there, done that, never again.
Get yourself a tidy 2wd, enjoy the freedom it provides and get yourself straightened out. Jumping in at syncro level isn't really to be recommended and just about every syncro owner has or had a 2wd bus or camper at some time. You'll learn a lot and it won't break the bank.
Not much more to be said really...

Probably the best advise. The only thing is once i brought a syncro i would never sell it. And with a 2wd i would. And i cant do what i want with it the selling value might go down. Also to get a decent 2wd can cost 5-6k.

really dont want to be down for you but i`ve seen folks make costly mistakes and dont want to see it happen to you.
you have to have a contingency with these vans.
as an idea. i`ve just bought another syncro panel van which had front diff and vc issues amongst other minor problems. i`m useing it daily after removing the propshaft, front diff and driveshafts. these faults i`ll fix in time and it`ll be a fully functioning syncro again. in the meantime i`m still enjoying the van, still have a syncro " sort of " and it hasn`t cost a fortune.
