I kind of wanted to get a feel for the commitment and cost side of things before asking this chap to view his van (I don't want to be a time waster, or a tyre kicker).

I think I've got a good balanced cross section of opinion from you all, cheers for that.

I have to admit after doing a load of work on my 2wd before selling it and wanting to have a van for camping in this season, I'm looking for something that doesn't need a lot of work, or comes with a load of hidden nasties.

After all that, I'm still not sure what to do, I don't need a Syncro but I think I might be getting a slight touch of Syncro fever, I've had the odd case of sweaty palms already, and I'm not even sure it's the right thing for me.

Would it hurt, to just take a look at it................................?

I was really unsure whether or not i was making the right decision when I bought my first Syncro. I felt sick for a few days after buying my second. Although that was due to never having spent that much before on a vehicle. I would now not go back to a 2wd. It just wouldn't cut it. We camp go pretty much anywhere. Green landing is really good fun and the meets like Syncropendance and Coney Farm are excellent!

What is the worst that would happen if you bought a Syncro? Check it over properly, don't pay over the odds and if after owning one for a while it isn't your thing, sell it and buy a 2wd. You should get most of your money back, you might even make a few quid!

Once you get a sniff of Syncrofever there's no going back I'm afraid!!!

I think the if your in it, its like house prices and what you want to get out of your investment as an item. As soon as you buy one you might as well kiss good bye to £15,000 inc your purchase price and if you dont want to commit to that then walk away. Just try and keep a grip on it and there is no point in spending £15,000 on something that will still be worth £4,0000 at the end of your efforts.

You look at the world differently when you have a syncro. Route planning becomes syncro specific, dirt tracks flag you down as you try to pass by them, weather warnings are an opportunity to wade in water or play in the snow and nowhere but the hardest to reach corner of any campsite is good enough for you. In fact You will want to camp on the beach rather than near it and Instead of driving round obstacles you will be sizing them up for the challenge. Not least you will be doing this in a rear engined Volkswagen van to the amazement of just about any Volkswagen enthusiast out there, people will stop in the streets as you pass and turn to the person next to them and nod approvingly. Am I selling it to you now ?

When ever we go out at the weekend, camping or day trip, we always take my notebook which has memory map loaded on it. Just so we can explore a few green lanes on the way home!

If it's LHD then NO!

I can do without the competition in looking for one as I'm now vanless due to some **** with a lead foot who is blind and couldn't see a white T25 Hightop from over a 100 mtrs.

But if it's RHD then go for it and enjoy the money pit

I know that feeling and now have two...actually looking for a twin slider to add to the collection....something about them twin sliders......syncro only of course!

Would love to get to a Syncro meeting...almost made Coney Farm...and broke down on the M5....DOH!..love em or hate em they let you down and cost a fortune....but...,put a smile on your face as you look down on a Landy then peel off along a byeway and wild camp without leaving a mark.....How good is THAT!:lol:

so a Syncro i've decided is not for me right now. I decided to stick to my plan and to look for a 2wd. If anyones interested the one i was thinking about is advertised on Preloved. i think my plans may change anyway now as i just bust my leg on saturday. . Cheer Rich
