engine wise i just wanted something not the norm.. i have seen 2.08v fitted and also the 16v golf units .. i like to push boundaries whilst keeping it all doable from vag parts. i believe this can be done with the 1.8t
ive trawled the web and tbh , its all a bit Subaru this or that or golf 8v or derv lump..

a g60 8v did cross my mind
i think ill get the interior how i want it, keep the roof as is, and then decide on what to do with the engine.

Have you considered retro-fitting a modern sequential fuel injection system to the DJ? You'll pick up some mpg and a little torque and a few more ponies for the £600 cost of something like Mega squirt. Dual map versions are available to make the most of LPG (the DJ is best on LPG as it's got a decent high comp.ratio which is good news, better than the low-comp DG or even the MV) and it will be more reliable too. Mega squirt is well proven, even if it does have a crappy name! I'm going this route on my SA 2.6 when it goes 20 valve
P.S. VR6 needs a raised hatch like all the bigger engine swaps, so there goes the rock and roll bed comfort. I speak from the experience of sleeping in my big-window SA with it's thin engine cover "pad" instead of a proper cushion, it's not to be repeated!
