Absolutely stunning! I've never been further north than Denmark so would love to get in the van, set the compass and drive.

Question is, how do you top that next year?

My suggestions: Iceland, Morocco, Eastern Europe, or better still go back to northern Scandinavia / Lapland now. The winter light and tranquility is awesome (best not camp though!!)

The Ferry was the best part of £1000 for two plus the van (Harwich- Esbjerg). Petrol is pretty similar to here in the UK. Food & booze will really catch you out and very expensive, so if you like the odd tipple I'd take as much as you can cram in before you go. Also stock up on food essentials if you plan on cooking yourselves. Eating out is expensive and expect to pay £20 for a basic meal and anything up to £10 for a beer and looking for a pub or bar is pointless, there aren't any. Driving is an absolute pleasure though with very little traffic and virtually uninterrupted amazing scenery. There are plenty of toll roads, a mixture of automated number plate recognition cameras and booths where you throw in the money (a couple of quid now & then). As yet we haven't received any bills for the automated tolls so I guess foreigners are exempt. Campsites are also expensive but generally very good and well equipped (around £20). They're very relaxed about wild camping and you won't have any problems finding great places to hitch up for the night. Apart from that it's truly amazing and I'd thoroughly recommend it. All in for a 3 week trip it cost us about £2500. Ouch.

With the ferry to Esbjerg, how lond did it take you to actually plant a tyre on Norweigan land? We are traveling with a young family so limited in the length of time we can commit to driving each day.

I didn't keep track of the exact mileage but I reckon we did about 1500miles in total.
The drive from Esjberg to Hirtshals in Denmark is about 4 hours. Then the ferry from Hirtshals to Kristiansand in Norway takes a couple of hours. Ferries from Harwich are overnighters and get in at lunchtime so it's pretty easy to get into Norway for early evening that day. You must book the Hirtshals to Kristiansand ferry and give yourself at least 5 hrs to get through Denmark just in case.
