Manual cable to gearbox, trailer, Sankey Powered trailer for that matter, which upon a google, shows military trailers used by Land Rover owners.

You are both joking, right? A power take off is a selectable, transmission-driven shaft for powering auxiliary equipment. They can be used to drive compressors, winches etc but the syncro one is a Finnish tax-dodge oddity. Must have cost a fortune to tool up and it's useless. You can't couple anything to it!
(LR finally dropped the PTO on Defenders when they altered the chassis so a shaft couldn't exit the rear crossmember, below the back door and right of the tow hitch)

Now all becomes clear, thanks for clearing that up. Guess its just not worth me trying to fix something that is useless
May as well fit my alarm led in that central position now

This is a PTO with De-coupler.
Fits on the front of the gearbox where the raer of the prop shaft attaches.

Thanks for those additional photos xriss, I will take a look under my Syncro tomorrow to see if there is any evidence of mine being fitted with one.

Well it is reduction geared, rotates at same speed as the G gear from what Aidan told me...torque a plenty for grinding up your neighbours noisy dog in the mincer

Not sure if you have solved the question, and also not sure if this will help. I have exactly the same on my 1987 Doka. Its a red LED for an aftermarket alarm system that had been taken out but the LED left rather than leave a hole in the dash.
