Had a good look above where the tank sits. A little bit of rust on the cross member but on the whole looks good. A lot of what looks like rust is adhesive.
Rust now cleaned back and treated with Vactan.
Tank straps are out of stock. Brickwerks are expecting new stock in a few days. Really wanted to get tank in on Sunday. Hopefully I'll be able to get this all back together for next weekend. At least with ordering from Brickwerks you know they will be sent as soon as they arrive.

Always nice when you find no rust, looks similar condition to what I saw of mine.
Syncro services sell the straps as well, should be pretty quick delivery. I just recieved an order from tstar connection, arrived in two days

The one way valve is no longer available. So I bought an 8mm valve and reducer. The resistance in the new valve is much greater than the original. I am now concerned about this. Any opinions please?

firstly i think that the pipe internal bore is 11mm, real odd size and no on but vw stock it, only 10mm or 12mm from normal motor factors.
i know that yours is a diesle but on a injected wbx the the 11mm pipe is about 5inches long where it joins the fuel pump (on the tank strap). it is then reduced on the out put of the pump. i can only thing that it has something to o with the volume of fuel entering the the pump before it gets pressurized,

Tom, the one-way valve is a peirburg part and also used on carb petrol syncros like mine. I also managed to break it

but was able to repair it (turned brass neck/cap, crimped on with red hermetite!)
You might have some success with ABS cement, I thought of it only after I had started machining...
The 11mm outlet and reducer on the fuel tank outlet is to standardize with the Bosch efi fuel pump inlet of the same size. VW were only prepared to make two variants of fuel tank, so they went with the biggest fittings and hose reducers on grounds of simplicity and cost.

I glued it yesterday with Polypipe solvent cement. I'm going to fit it lower down rather than on top of the tank. Atleast then I'll be able to get to it again should I need too. Although this will mean when the tank is full it will constantly have fuel against it. I hope this doesn't cause a problem.
