hi steve , 1 the tools you used on your mini won't help at all, everything on your bus is metric and minis are imperial
2 the haynes manual is rubbish, it even sugests if your engine is rattling you may have a worn timing chain???[ which you dont have one in your engine].
3 the engine fitted to your bus should be a1600cc ,CT engine, vw only fitted them for a couple of years and then gavein .
I owened one for a couple of years, when i bought it it had a stack of recipts from the main dealers all to do with the engine[total cost of which added up to £4500] and it still wasen't right!!
4 photos would help !
5 there should be a little black box near the coil with two plugs into it boath have 3 wires in them pull them out and join them together and see if it runs better then ! it may not be there at all [usualy because vw mechanics did away with it ]
6 by the sound of your start up problem I would sugest the carb/choke isen't set correctly,

Thanks for that. I'll start having a look soon. As far as tools are concerned it's just the basics. It was an old mini. The engine I have is a reconditioned one 1.6. The original was a 1.9. This was done before I bought it. I'll let you know how it goes. Many thanks to you all and the humour :ok
