The locking pin sits flush with the vane so can't get a grip on it.

Is it easy to replace the ignition system with the 009? If i am correct the 009 does not use the control unit or something around there. So if that is the case how does it switch the coil?

I found the bag with the bits in. There was the vane, a circlip, a couple of washers and the pin, it's only about 6-7mm long. The dizzie shaft wasn't there so I couldn't try to see if it held the vane in place or not?

Replacing the original dizzie with a 009 is easy, but hardly anyone on here will tell you it's a good idea. It's a much simpler set-up because it's only a mechanical system. You don't need the idle stabaliser or the control unit because the 009 has got points. You don't need the vacuum pipes because there's no advance or retard. The downside of this is you have to time it at 6-8' BTDC for idle and the mechanical advance will only take it to 30-32' BTDC at 3000 RPM. The other problem seems to be the build quality can effect how the advance curve comes in as well. I guess I got lucky with my 009. Without the vac unit taking the idle timing down to 6'ATDC you might get emission problems, but my van has never failed the MOT on emissions. Without the vac advance taking the timing to 40' BTDC at high revs you'll probably be down on power, but my van can pull up most hills in third and can hit +75mph and turns in 19mpg if I don't cane it.

If you can find a replacement standard dizzie off a recently deceased engine that would be the best way to go. Just make sure it's the right dizzie for your engine and it was recently working. The first one I got only had one side of the vac can working and the dizzie plug needed to be held on with a zip-tie. The second one turned out to be off a DF engined van and one of the springs on the mechanical advance was missing.

When I finally cobbled a working dizzie together it did make the van feel a bit more torquey for the week or so it worked but not so different to the performance with my 009? I will get around to trying to get a working electronic set-up but even then I'll keep the 009 as a spare to get me home when one of the black boxes pops its clogs again.

woo hoo... I have successfully dismantled the distributor. I used a bit of WD40 & a drop or two of oil and left it a day or so.

The insides are rather dirty so was wondering how I would go about giving the unit a nice clean. I was thinking of dumping them in some petrol (not the vacuum unit of course). Is this not a good idea?

If you clean it with petrol make sure you lubricate the mechanical advance linkage with a few drips of engine oil afterwards.

Ok all... I have finally found another distributor but the codes are different.

The one I removed has the following codes:

Z 415
0 237 024 035
025 905 205 Q

The one I have just received is:
Z 414
0 237 024 011
025 905 205 J

I don't see too much difference between the two. Will this work in my engine?

When I try to insert the distributor I find that the O-rings are different making slotting it back in quite difficult. I have not managed to force it in yet but want to confirm with the following pics whether I should replace/swap out the O-rings or whether to just squeeze the o-ring into the shaft.

I don't know what the difference is between the two dizzies, but they're both off a DG engine. If the o-ring is a new GSF one they can be tight because they are quite round in profile. Give it a good lick of engine oil before you wiggle it in. Just make sure the dizzie is fully located in the drive before you turn the engine over. If you try to re-use the old seal you might find it cracks up as you lever it off as they get brittle with age. When I first took off my 009 a year after having the van it didn't have an o-ring at all so it's not a critical seal!

Thanks everyone cor all their help. Much appreciated. Got the distributor in eventually and she starts up just like normal now. Set the timing and all is good.

Except for a leak that has now developed around the corner of the rocker cover. Very small leak but it drips down onto the exhaust and causes a bit of smoke. So gonna most likely have to replace that gasket now. Oh joy.

Thanks again all.
