Damn and blast!! Battery light is now fully glowing and there's a terrible whine from the alternator, checked belt tension, etc, but quick test shows 11.5v coming from alternator which is what the volt meter in the cab is showing. Alternator is now off for more checks. Watch this space!!

if it's showing the same as the battery then there's no output
take the batt lead off then check the alt

Verdict...knackered! We've had it in pieces, think the regulator is ok, but measurements taken at other points show zilch readings. Couldn't have come at a worse time as both tax and mot are due.

Looks like I'm going to source a replacement alternator and be done with. Now the question is what is the main difference between a 45a unit as fitted to mine versus a 65a unit as fitted to some variants? Can I switch to a 65a unit without harming anything?

you can switch to any amp Alternator that has the same face as yours
The 65 amp Alt was fitted mainly to Diesels. I think, so the face will be wrong I guess.
90 amp alts are the most common upgrade... I had one on in place of my 45 amp..and it made no difference to me whatsoever.
these are found at most Alternator/startermotor repair shops/suppliers.
also fitted to the early golf
beware some are bolt on cable and some are plug you can adapt either

The part number for the regulator on my unit (a Bosch 0120 489 440) is 197 311 005. Apart from JK (who want £22.50 + postage for one) does anyone know where else I can source the same part cheaper? Thanks

Hello Guys, I don't mean to hijack this thread but I have the same problem, just replaced the alternator but it looks like I have a fault in the ignition circuit, this in turn has just killed my replacement alternator, the light stays on (batt light) even if you disconnect the alt lead when you have the ignition on.... any idea’s?

As the battery light derives it's earth via a stationary alternator the only way that the light is remaining on when the alternator is disconnected is by the lead from the bulb to the alternator plug is shorted to earth somewhere. Check the length of that wire for a short.

Thats a long wire... is there any way of getting a wiring diagram for a 1982 left hand drive 1.6 (non) turbo diesel westy and if this is an earth problem is it likely to kill the new alternator?

Thanks California Dreamin, I got a new regulator within 24hrs, fitted it last night and battery light went out!! Unfortunately the battery gave out it's last puff so is on charge at present. I've got an annoying squealing noise now. Don't think it's down to belt tension, maybe the alternator pulley end brg. I've been given a part number for it 023 903 221 D, but not sure where to locate one. Any ideas?
