In my younger, less mechanically sympathetic days I got the needle off the end of the speedo on a standard 2.1 Caravelle.

I once got pulled for apparently doing 95 on the A45 in a 1200 bug. I lifted boot and said "With that??? you've got to be joking." You've never seen such an oily old engine. He let me off. Mind you, needle WAS against the stop pin and I was caning it. If you're gonna bore up an engine, don't dress it up, thats my motto

I have never "tested" the top speed, because, as has been mentioned, at anything over 80 MPH a DG really does sound like it is revving hard.
Mine will run at 80mph sounding OK but I don't ever cruise at more than 70, usually a bit less. (This also helps me avoid a speeding ticket of course

and obviously saves on fuel)
Does anyone know what revs your average DG is doing at say 80 mph ?
And what is the maximum safe revs ? ( I do know that, whatever the figure, it does not mean one can run at those revs on a 25 year old engine all day and expect it to like it !! )

Regarding top revs, the speed limiting distributor rotor is 'rated' at 5400 rpm.
Any engine of that age at those revs will sound like its about to die!!

I find beyond 65 the drive starts getting a bit sketchy, 65 its barely needs steering.
Sketchy + wind = scary.

I havent even tried a top speed but have taken it unloaded on my own to 70 on the motorway. Wouldnt dream of doing that with the family onboard.

1.6 diesel cruises at 62/65 mph - once had it off the clock on a big hill on the a30 in neutral - done it a year later in 5th gear 75 mph max - put it back in neutral, an indicated 95 mph -

There are some drag curves here for the T25, go to the Wiki link, and then scroll down to the last two graphs at the bottom of the page..
https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Fu ... unofficial
They are power Vs speed for T25s, obviously a median figure applies, as mostly they are for caravelle or kombi body types.
But should give you a good idea how many horsepower are required for some of these speeds... in no-wind level-road conditions!

Had mine up to 75mph coming down the A1 from Rothbury. Felt like it still had a bit left in it. Only 3000 miles on a rebulid engine.

i would be scared to have a rev counter on my 4 speed 1.6td when it's showing anything around the 70mph area the engine sounds like it's going into orbit ... :lol
