Brilliant place for many different sports, especially hiking/walking (Slovenia's national hobby) mountain climbing/biking, fishing and kayaking, and naked sun bathing for some reason?

We stayed at a hotel on Lake Bohinj when on a trekking holiday a few years back. And yes, there are bears in the woods. But they're not as dangerous as the home made schnapps you can buy in any bar.

Food is wonderfully basic. Cooked fish or meat/meat pies with boiled potatoes and rice making up much of the menu. Beer (pivo?) excellent. Wine home made and cheap. When asked for the wine menu on our first night was instantly given a stone jug of red wine with froth on the top. The waiter said, 'here is wine'. So that's the choice then? Fine with us! Smoked meats, cheeses and pickled mushrooms are superb.

Locals (then) are friendly and return your Dobar dan (good afternoon) with a polite smile and you can roam for miles in total safety...apart from the bears. Just kidding. Lots of dairy cows with jangling bells around necks spread out across hills and countryside too. In all a wonderfully relaxed place and totally litter free. Also it's the perfect place for star gazing due to very little light pollution......and as much as I tried each night never suffered a single hang over. We put this down to the home made wine and schnapps not being stuffed full of nitrates or unhealthy chemicals.

Slovenia has got it right. And I cant wait to return.

Hi Jed
Just joined the forum, after meeting a member of the forum in Croatia.
We have just come back from a European tour in our T25.
We were in Bled for a couple of nights, two weeks ago - absolute must. Didn't get to see more as we were on way home.
Campsite (well sign posted - on side of lake) is excellent - camper, 2 persons and electrical hook up - £25.00 per night.
Small tour train circumnavigates the lake - round trip 3 Euros - so easy to leave the camper on the camp site.
Try the bob sleigh run on hillside opposite the castle!

I didn't spot any reference to vignettes in the posts...aopologies if I am repeating... Austrian and Slovenian motorways require you to buy a vignette - small sticker for the windscreen - - motorway toll. They are then scanned from cameras as you travel and pass through toll barriers. Minimum is ten day vignette - Austria was about 12 Euros and Slovenis 7Es. You can buy them at most petrol stations approaching the borders.

Thanks again Chaps. We are in Slovinia now a few stop offs in Belgium, luxemborg, France, Germany (black forest), Austria, Italy, slovinia, Croatia (then Pag island), and now back in Slovinia heading north. We were going to head off back into Austria, Germany, then CV but how can we miss lake Bled after such good reviews? We are by the Soka River at the moment and have 12 days left I think so why not

Thanks for all the advice....

Jed

Just walked round Lake Bled :ok

You could see carp at least a meter long, it's quite amazing to see. They are setting up
for the world rowing championships at the moment and it looks like to be quite a big deal.
