well you would think that, wouldnt you ...but ive just replied to another thread on here and the guy had posted some pics up of his engine..wanting to know what it was ..and its a 1y and the ribbed side of the belt runs onto the water pump pulley on his.
my pulley has some signs of ribs on it but they arnt pronounced enough to locate the belt into so i just thought it might be the markings from the belt running round.
strange coz it seems so right with the back of the belt on the pulley :?

pics would be great :ok

also..what got me thinking about it was that over time the w/p pulley would surely destroy the ribs as they were forced onto a flat surface and make the belt run untrue.

im no mechanic though

:ok
problem is that the 1.6 is so sweet and reliable and economical, pulls well for what it is so loathe to fit the 1y, then what am I going to do with a mint low mileage 1.6

 well thats thrown a curve ball

i guess its a case of actually looking which way the pump is supposed to go round.still its gonna send the water in different directions to what the radiator wants it

True, direction does matter.

However the post before was the first time in 10 years anyone has mentioned a problem with water direction - I would think that the other direction pump is for another engine with a similar fit - but who knows, Im not saying its not true.

Thing with the engine I have shown you is that as you will see from the pulley there is no sign of the belt having ever run the other way since 1998 - pulley would show line marks.

Also the belt would not last like that, when have you ever seen another car run a belt like that? Why have ribs full stop?

Basically our vans are funny old things and if they work i would say that they are right as they are :ok

im gonna try and get to the bottom of it.if anyone has a haynes manual for a mk3 golf/jetta that has the diesel and petrol engine combined pls have a look at the belt setup for me or even better a coolant circulation diagram.it could be a lot of 1y installations have the belt on the 'easy way' and thought it must be right

i thought it was strange that the ribs ran on a smooth pulley but who am i lol ,

Resurrecting an old post I know - Have a manual that covers this now - it says that the type of belt fitted depends upon the specification of the model concerned! No help at all.
My 1Y from a 98 Caddy has a flat belt with an anticlockwise pump, if it had had a v-belt that would have meant that it would have needed a clockwise one.
My CS has the single v-belt with a clockwise pump.

Looks like you can choose which belt setup you want and then choose the pump to suit.

Sorry for bringing back an old post but do anyone has pictures from the clockwise and counterclockwise pumps to see the diference between them?
Im having a problem with a 1y destroying the vanes of at least one pump a year. So far im on the 5th pump over 70k km.
And after seeing this post im starting to think if what they keep selling me are the correct parts for the belt routing i have
