do you still havethe round multiplug onthe 1y ?...i tookmine off when i did the swap soit wasthesameasthe1.6

There is a round multi-plug underneath the plug with the temperature sender wires coming out of it. It's not connected to anything though

has it just started taking ages to go out or has it always been like it?

It's always been like it, it just took me ages to get around to doing something about it!! I replaced the glow-plugs yesterday, and they were proper done in, so the first time I turned the key I expected the light to go out quickly, which it didn't. And here I am, lol

ok...for people who hate looking at diagrams(like me)
i had a look today not just because you wanted some help but because mines been doing it too
this is on mine..from the connection on the fuel pump on the solenoid follow the wire back and youll see it goes into a sheath.coming out of the sheath also is the wire to the glow plug bar and also another wire that is blue and white.this is the wire for the temp sensor to tell the glow plug relay how long to stay on for.it doesnt go to the temp sensor for the clocks on the dash..its a different sensor.
i found that i had a break in the blue and white cable right next to the sensor ..so i remade the connector and its working great now
while i was there i thought id have a play and disconnected the connector..this made the glow plug light stay on for around 35 seconds(thats what it was doing before)
if i connected the wire to the '-' on the battery with a short peice of wire it didnt allow the glow plug light to come on at all..so if you try this and get the same results then everything should be fine apart from the sensor.
you could possibly be connected up to the wrong sensor

oh..and as i understand it wether your plugs are good or not ,it shouldnt effect how long the light stays on for..thats down to the temp sensor

AND..see if you have a sensor on your top hose housing on the head..i swapped the one from the 1y for the 1.6 one ..as this had the sensor built in to it for the glow plugs

Wellie, can you see where that blue/white wire goes to at the other end to the sensor? Mine is cut, but I cannot see the other end of it anywhere at all.

I have two sensors close to each other - I'm going to go and take a photo and upload it now, and see if it corresponds to yours at all

Hi Wellie - first pic is of the sensor and connector on the water pipe flange. You can see the cut blue/white wire poking up. Breather pipe is moved out of the way for clarity: -

the ones on the rear of the head are for your temp guage on the dash and the other is for oil pressure..so shouldnt be anything to do with the glow plugs
looks like the mechanic who did your conversion kept the 1y housing and sender(i used my 1.6 one so it didnt confuse me)
all i have on that one is a sensor with one conection on it for a blade type
i think thats why i changed it all as the 1.6

did you trace the blue and white wire as to going back in to the loom with the glow plug and fuel pump ones?

mind you..looking at your pics..is it possible that the one on the back of the head is just for the oil pressure..the other wire is just an earth onto that collar, and the one on the housing at the front has multiple wires on it as it can give multiple resistances for various things.

i couldnt see it before but i can now...i would say that that blue and white wire that comes out of the multiplug that is cut should be connected to the blue and white from the loom...try and find the blue and white wire from the loom and conect it up..it should be with the fuel pump and glow plug wires

Just to confirm, the red/yellow wire is earthed, and originates in the connector that the blue/white wire comes out of. I'm off to the garage now to try and find the other end of that cut blue/white wire

if you open the black box up you should see the blue and white one in with the bunch of wires...try and follow it from there out into the loom

got to go and work on next doors tranny van so ill be back in an hour or so to see you have sorted it

Okay, so I joined up the two blue/white wires, and when the ignition is turned on, I still get the click of the relay, and 12v on the glow-plug bus bar. But the plugs don't seem warm to the touch. Undo the blue/white wire, and exactly the same - 12v on the bus bar, but no heat from the plugs. I'm confident the plugs are good as I replaced them just a couple of days ago....
