When you changed belts, I assume you changed the timing belt???
Did you check cam and fuel pump timing?
Timing the fuel pump on a diesel engine is like timing the distributor on a petrol engine.
Not being condescending. Just starting with basics.
Did you use the 1.6 sump and oil pump in place of 1.9 sump and oil pump?
Did you prime the pump as lloydy asked?
Where about in country are you?

By the sounds of it the pump is full of air! Also by the sound of it you dont really know what your doing, perhaps get some one who does!

Let Dr.Pete have a stab at your problem...
You have done all the donkey work but could not get the INJECTION PUMP to prime ?
SO you thought the best option would be to fit a LIFT PUMP to help the diesel up to the INJECTION PUMP.
You could not get a Diesel Lift Pump so you tried a Petrol Lift Pump.....yes so far ?
Weeeellllll, not so bad.
Remove the big Banjo fitting on top of the pump and fill it with diesel.
And maybe a silly question but is the fuel solenoid opening (can you hear it "click" when you turn
your key on and off. Have you got a black wire connected to the right "thing" ?
