i was wondering...im thinking about roof tenting it, is the route through hairy forest and low tree scrub?
( should i pack the pole chainsaw! )

well it's been a few years since Russel and Jake and Andy trimmed one track for the hitops, not sure if that track is open though

In the absence of any "Away team" action sorting any reccying the routes I think it would be prudent to do some checking beofre setting out.
Could be a big wasted trip.
I don't have any maps, Aiden sent me memory map overlays, and we thought we had memory map on a computer here, seems we don't.
SO I'm a bit stuck!

Right. Thanks to Si for the heads up on potential restrictions. I had a chat with one or two people on Friday night and it seems I've volunteered to look into the route planning.

I've spend all of today with my laptop going through every offroad route we did last time (2007), to identify which may no longer be drivable.

The itinerary for 2007 included 8 offroad routes in Cumbria, and 16 in Yorkshire. Of those all bar 3 of the Yorkshire routes were driven, those 3 being omitted on grounds of time IIRC.

I used information from Cumbria County Council, North Yorkshire County Council, and the Dales National Park to assess the legality of the routes at the present time.

It looks like all the Cumbria routes are still OK (they are listed by Cumbria as 'Trail Routes' and have been officially surveyed for suitability), with one exception (Ulpha Park) which may be blocked).

In Yorkshire, one route (Gorbeck Road) was subject to a TRO last August and can no longer be driven by general motor traffic. Another route appears to be a bridleway for its entire length, and three others have restrictions along part of their length. However three of these can be overcome with minor diversions or nearby alternative routes. I've also identified a couple of new routes in the area that might be worth a look. In summary then I don't think were going to be short of offroad routes to drive.

Last time, the format of the event included a series of challenges, involving the identification and photographing certain landmarks. I assume these waypoints were chosen by Kev when he did the initial reccy. However so little time is now remaining before the event I think it's unlikely I can come up with a whole new set of waypoints. If people are keen, I can have a go, perhaps including some of the waypoints we used last time. Feedback on this welcomed.

The other thing is campsites. Neil has contacted a number of places in the area, and settled on Staveley just off the A591 between Kendal and Windermere for the first night. This is much further east than last time, and if we are to take in the westmost route (Bootle Fell), quite a big loop round will be involved. It might be better to try and find a campsite further west to avoid this. Either that or scratch the first route. It wouldn't really be coast-to-coast then though. What do people feel ?

6 of one and half a dozen of the other as far as I'm concerned as I'm just going to commute for which ever day falls on the Middle of the dales to the east coast, Can't camp in an Iltis and I don't do tents, could do a B&B but i got enough sh!t for doing that in Germany....

Oh, and the Iltis hasn't been out of Huddersfield yet!

Ha ha, so was I but Neils booked a place in Staveley the first night and one between Whitby and Scarborough the last night, and reportedly the landlord at the pub at Helwith Bridge is OK with us rocking up on the Sat night. I'm considering looking for a spot further west (eg. Wasdale) for the first night given any encouragement. Unless people really want to east-west ?

If any of you decide to start on the west side Wasdale would give you a good starting point at the coast, say Ravensglass. You could then at least take in The Hard Knott Pass or even Wild camp up there as their only looks to be a few of you on the list. There is a C&C site at Ravensglass that my parents use from time to time, that might be worth a look or the National Trust site at Wasdale head is good, though it only takes a few campervans at a time unless you want to use the carpark. I know the area quite well and I know what the roads are like in the area. If you want to crack on driving you won't be getting far fast on the little roads so best doing what Andy suggests and start near the coast (Wasdale etc...) it can take hours to drive across The Lakes on normal roads.

Not that I am going or getting involved, their looks to be enough cheifs all ready
