Moooore

still puzzled. Got my bit o wood and had a good listen about the engine. If I listen to the top of the engine, the sump or on either head all I can hear is a nice chatter chatter.

If I listen on the oil filter, water pump or distributor or the large steel water pipe that runs across the back of the engine just above the main pulley I can hear the low down rattly rattle noise. And also its very audible if you listen to the back box.

I disconnected the belt so the alternator and water pump were not moving and the sound is still there.

The chiff chiff is coming from the heads on the R side of the engine as you look at it, maybe exhaust ??

All suggestions welcome and mucho appreciated. The engine runs fine, should I just ignore it, and if I do and its something major like crank bearings, what's the likely times scale and outcome ?.

Black box?
well if it isn't water pump then its the distributor..or oil pump perhaps
have you had a look to see if the springs have come off the weights in the distributor?

sorry back box... is that the silencer?

it could very well be vibration is it touching any thing.
grab the engine and shake it.. can you hear a noise?
it could be a loose baffle inside even

Good call that man. The sound is loudest when you listen to the silencer and under the van but when you listen to the sump all sounds very happy in there.also there would be some nominal resonance back into the engine cos of the exhaust ports on the cylinders by the silencer being very close to the silencer. Maybe its making sense now :)
