SO AdrianC I think there is something odd about my air intake.
either that or the "flap" is glued down!
The black stuff appears to be some of the plastic of the air intake!
and one of the screws is missing (gaffer tapped down).
I couldn't see anything that would move as a choke should!
what have I missed?

Looks a lot like it's been on LPG at some point, and whilst the rest of the kit might have been removed, they've not removed the mixer...
The choke flap'll be beneath that - whatever that is, it wasn't put there by a nice man in a VW factory...

Yes it does have LPG (so that's where it goes in)
so how do I get to the choke flap. that LPG mixer looks attached with red glue.
I guess the only way is to remove the glue and reapply (any idea what glue that is?)

just use a good quality gasket goo when you refit.
while you are in there, find out why that third stud is missing and replace it. Its important.not being there affects the induction.
pity you didnt tell us you were on lpg sooner really, its a handy diagnostic point when trying to find fuel probs
