I wasnt thinking straight.. Sorry...

I bet thats a DF pulley (been a very long time since I saw a DF so cant remember) and its marked 5 deg ATDC.. so yes the V is in the wrong place for a DG/or to time it up BTDC.. (wondered why something didnt make sense to me when I first saw that pic, that would explain it..)

Pulley rotates clockwise... so mark the same distance to the right of the U groove and the same again, then you have a range to aim for the middle of..

Or have I lost the plot completely.. :rofl :rofl

Oh.. also, you can do a little check to see if the dizzy is in the correct place as well.. with it at TDC the rotor arm should point towards the little line in thr top edge of the dizzy body with the cap off..
If it isnt you may need to check the dizzy drive is in the correct position Haynes manual covers this.. (and prob DF timing too..)

LOL! Well, i really don't know now either :rofl

Everything for me looks like it rotates clockwise, but i don't have a very sharp eye to notice it at full speed :)

Tings that make me believe it:

-Originally it was indeed a DF engine, which is set at 5ATDC with vac connected (incl. retard vac) and crankcase breather disconnected, so the little V mark in the back (far from the camera / front of the vehicle) should be timing mark 5ATDC.
-The info in Samba suggest a possible analogy?
-The pulley should rotate clockwise to keep the pulley bolt screwed in

When looking with the strobe light:
-In idle, if i disconnect the retard vac, the TDC mark (U notch) moves anticlockwise.
-If i increase rpms, the TDC mark also moves anticlokwise too (advance vac working its way)

:rofl hahaha or do I really have it all that wrong around?

That V in the pulley is the 5 deg ATDC.. ignore it.. measure the same distance to the right of the U and then from that mark more to the right again. then see if you can get the dizzy turned for case alignment in the middle of those marks.. It will run much better then... :ok

Great! Thanks! Now it seems all make sense. Hehe. I will do that tomorrow. VW got all confused and got my timing 10 deg btdc with retard vac connected. So that is like 22 deg btdc disconnected!!! Finally I got my money back and will do it my self.

Thank you a lot all you guys! :D

Cheers!
