Brilliant il do that tomorrow after going back to GSF and re purchasing the thermo lol (i took it back) and seeing if the pump is seized so may be mid afternoon, hope this is ok?
my location il update .......tonight (Milton keynes and Luton))-scrub that not tonight as iv deleted the email with my member number on need it to fill out profile DoH......will do as and when i can then



the advise on fitting il follow to the letter, i so need the van running !!!

To be honest i dont think i did eventhou i tried it both ways, but i think where i went wrong was perhaps where i was putting the o ring, il try again tomorrow.

plus gsf stats are of questionable quality

buy a brickwerks one or a gen vw one.......

The problem is GSF are down the road to me and i really cant be waiting for parts atm, i did see one place called Volkspares.co.uk selling them for 18 quid
At the moment any thermo successfully fitted (as opposed to none) will do

the reason i mentioned it is because i had trouble with a mates van overheating , stat was fooked. put gsf one in still overheating, put another gsf one in overheated, then spent a month or so checking for head gasket, changed radiator and hoses etc still overheated, put brickwerks stat in problem cured.

choice is yours

gen vw stats are 22 quid iirc.

as a new owner you wont be aware that there are some properly shocking parts out there.

it may save you money in the long run if you heed the advice of some of the older members

Fair point didnt realise just how much of a difference it made, i stand corrected and a little wiser because of it, much appreciated as i wil take older vw owners advise (and listen). Order it tomorrow from brickwerks!!!!!!

Jason has summed it up perfectly there. The quality of some parts are despicable and this is generally all across the motor trade. Brickwerks do sell only the best quality available.

The old saying Buy cheap, buy twice. Has never been more apt.

Also bear in mind some other sellers sell rubbish at top prices so experience does really pay off and there's plenty of it on this forum.

make sure the old seal has been removed , also no old bits of stat are in there, no metal should be in the fitting ring , only the new stat!

quite a few checks to do before bleeding , all simple but can be time consuming , most will alow the engine to run perfectly until you loose coolant - then you cant bleed or get it to run right!

top stat housing also has no metal parts - plastic bleed screw, check while its apart that it moves and opens the air hole for bleeding( do not remove the screw , just a few turns should do)

its possible if its indeed ice that caused the pump to seize its possible it will survive.

i would suggest a refil with water and full bleed test run before draining and filling with antifreeze due to possible more faults and cost of antifreeze.

it can take a good 45 mins/ 1hour to bleed one of these vans , yon need the cooling fan to cut in /out a few times to make sure all is ok.

EVERY hose will be hot when the engine is at full temprature - if not something is blocked!

keep an eye on the temp gauge if it goes into the upper red then switch off , below the red is ok . keep an eye out for leaks .

keep the main header tank FULL to the brim ( tank with blue cap)

check the 'blue darelick ' cap, with it secure on the expansion tank try blowing/sucking on it - if air can pass either way it is FAULTY and you will NOT be able to bleed the system!!!

as long as the system is in good health they are easy to bleed - if your having problems you are doing it wrong or have other problems.

Hi all just a update on progress (Billy many thanks for the post very helpful) Billy i had put the thermo in the way you suggest with ring seal on the bottom and i tried ring seal on the top of the thermo but it still didnt close flush mmmmm

Ok i have ordered FROM BWERKS new thermo and also dalek cap as i sucked and blew, (im getting worried about this site as iv been sucking and blowing all sorts since joining ) and yes the cap appears to let air pass, so its highly likelly the cause of the overheating.

Whilst i was waiting for delivery hope it will be tomorrow i have taken the dashboard off Grrr what a job ....but il say no more as this is a seperate post il be doing
