Hello again all, and thanks for the response.
Can anybody please tell me the size of the thread on the stub axle, or failing that the socket size for the nut? I'm considering trying a die nut of the same size or one size down.

When you get an opinion of worn stub axle it is normally that the inner or outer bearing has been spinning it's inner casing which has then worn the stub axle shoulder so no amount of tightening gets rid of this excessive movement. The stub axle itself is much softer than the bearing.
I too am concerned by the statement 'stub axle worn, nut cannot be fully tightened' because as others have said these are taper roller bearings and should not be loaded by the nut AT ALL! but adjusted with a little play to allow for expansion.
These types of bearings are being used far less nowadays and I sometimes question the experience or otherwise of modern mechanics to understand how these are properly fitted and adjusted. I've seen far too many hamfisted ignorant spanner boys wanging these up with a power bar!
