Small fly or gnat like 2 winged insects that tend to congregate around water in the early evening. Not harmful but are a nuisance as they are attracted to people too. The word 'midge' covers a variety of species of small fly but only a small proportion of these actually bite, usually the females.

Hope it doesn't put you off

midges btw hate brewers yeast so, marmite and heavy ales are the ways to fend them off and the bites heal better if youve got lots of vitamin b12, again marmite and heavy ales!
remember, MAY for the sun
enjoy!

Seriously Robert. I have been to both Wales and Scotland on numerous occasions, though not in the van. I found Scotland to be the most scenic and you are able to get close to the lochs, hills etc. With limited mobility I reckon the wonderful Wallace Monument in Stirling is a no no for you as far as going to the top is concerned, but it's still an awesome sight in my opinion. As is Stirling Castle. The drive around Loch Lomond is a nice one. The train trip from Fort William to Mallaig is great. And if you're into Harry Potter the train goes over a viaduct which was used in one of the films (or so I'm told). As for midges: My wife was badly bitten by them. I was OK. Maybe my bad/good taste in aftershave helped. Also the trip across to the East coast is great. Very Scotland as my kids said. Then you can drive down through Northumberland which I think is very scenic. You'll eventually hit good old Nth Yorkshire and it's scenic coast. Whitby is well worth a visit!
Robert, Scotland is brilliant, not too expensive and I found the Scottish people very welcoming and friendly. A nice place to stay is Tyndrum. Great campsites nearby and a lovely pub (Paddys Bar!!!). Scotland is not as anti camping as England IMHO. If you choose to do Scotland I hope you enjoy it. Happy travelling and drive carefully.

Hi Robert a midge is our verson of a mosquito but only a fraction of its size. You can get creams and sprays to help keep thew away but it also depends on when you come over and where you go when you do.Don't be put off by them as it is a lovely country we stay in and they are not out all the time.
