Diff situation I know but when I was over there ze Germans could fine you and endorse points. An unpaid fine can lead to ccj's occurring.

Not sure if it's the same when travelling through though I sure hope not because 500 euros is way to big I think. I know since march the rules changed where bigger penaltys and fines were enforceable.

I just googled a bit, I couldn't find a proper answer but it seems that you basically pay the fine but they can't endorse the points.
Ignoring it doesn't work, if you don't pay the fine goes up, if you don't pay then send a debt recovery agency.
Would be nice to read something official like.
One web site suggested phoning the AA or RAC to see where you stand which is fair comment, as their legal team, chances are your paying the privelage of their use but no one bothers.

Dunno, when I called them I thought I had dropped a clanger because they wanted to know what engine it has, apparently you get well shafted in Germany for driving a car without the right engine on the cars logbook. Luckily I changed it the week before we went but it hadnt quite registered. They asked if the westie pop top roof was kosher too...

It's registered in the UK, it's legal in the country of registration, I wouldn't worry.
Lots of German vans weren't fitted with rear fog lights, compulsary here from 1980 onwards, But I'm sure we didn't fine or order german cars off the road in the 80's.

So what can a dra do? Nothing unless it has court powers.
Legal ruling and proper info is what is needed.
At the moment it looks like this is turning into a civil matter and not a criminal matter (which is what it would be viewed if it was a uk speeding issue)

Thoroughly bizarre question seeing as though the Germans don't put the engine code on the log book! Hence no trace as what engine it is running.

Hey guys! Stay cool - I drive all over Europe. I thought the worst zappers were Italy - got a ticket last year fot €150 from 18 months before through the Italian Embassy!

I have one here for the Netherlands for doing 3kmh over the limit! I have more from the Netherlands than anywhere else and have done low mileage here

To answer your question - NO YOU WONT GET GERMAN POINTS. So stop panicking as the penalty system isnt harmonised across Europe. You do however get the fine. Its not enforcable in the UK but if you go back to Germany they might pick you up for it so its better to get it paid.

Hope that puts some minds at rest even if it doesnt settle the bill

I was fined 200 euro for driving into Austria without a "vignet" which is €30 to buy (i know this NOW) This Vignet is a once a year charge to use the motorways.
I was pulled over in a " lane control " (300 orange traffic cones), The van was photographed from the front (to prove that the requisite sticker was not fitted, I Imagine) I was asked for Driving Licence & Passport , serial numbers etc were noted , then I was given a slip of paper and asked for 200. Without it being said, your passport/licence were returned when he had the money, he even had facilities to take a credit card.

But the best bit is I received a receipt through the post 2 months after, he hadn't asked for an address, so clearly Driver & vehicle information & details are available on a Pan-european basis to other governments. It makes sense really, otherwise people would disregard local driving/parking laws with impunity. plus It is a self financing system & a great revenue stream...but it suuuuuucks when you are caught

Also got a minor speeding ticket in a hire car in germany years ago , charged to my credit card , 3 0r 4 months after the event

Paul, you are a feckin jinx, you are. I just got a ticket as well. I was done when I went to Hereford on the 2nd day of Syncro25. I dont understand it all but its for €200. Ill get it all translated later. It looks like I was doing 83kmh in a 60 zone.

They must have some special rate for foreign reg cars, because the normal rates are a lot lower, see here:

first batch is for speeding in built up areas, second for open road

(Fahrverbot = driving ban)

It appears there is an admin fee for tracking foreign cars which explains the high cost of these fines. Apparently its €120 per search. FFS

Yep German police have got it sorted.

If the German police arrest you, you get charged for being taken to the cells and for the cost of being put up for the night, apparently

Not like here where our successive inept governments make the rest of us pick up the tab.

How about tow-charges. I got some from Norway, last week, first I've heard about it but they've (UK address) have added £96 late charges!!!

Shall speak to RAC tomorrow, but any advice appreciated.
