This may be a silly question to some but.....

If I wanted to use alloys from another vehicle, would I have to choose a big heavy car to make sure the alloys can take the weight of a camper?

I've been looking at some Audi alloys and quite like the pepper pot style alloys that came on some A4 and A6 cars.
They will hide the drum brakes but still look cool.

your van will weigh in excess of two tonnes when fully loaded.
Choosing a non OE wheel must take into account the weight of your fully loaded van
a Merc ML 4 X 4 weighs over two tonnes it's an off road vehicle so the wheel is designed to take a bash ... what does an Audi A4 weigh?

if you're unsure ask Audi or any car manufacturer about kerb weight specs.

I didn't think my camper weighed that much, I must try get it weighed.

Well I would imagine the A4 and A6 are probably just under and just over 1.5 tons, so I guess that idea is out the window.

That is very true!

I'm not sure what conversion I have, leisure drive is the only thing written outside.
It has a large fibre glass high roof, sloped at the front, ladder up to some storage at the rear.
On the inside, there is a bunk up front, a extendable bed up top at the rear, a sofa bed down below. There is a two ring cooker, grill, fridge, sink, presses etc. Also got a small portaloo in there as well.

I have more or less the same with my Autosleeper
I took mine to a public weighbridge just before we set off camping for the week.

So with no fuel, camping gear, food and just me in it, she scaled at 1920kg... fat lardy cow :D

Did you have a particular VW sign in mind?

Yes I just looked too and there's none ..used to be loads and really cheap.. because there were Barabus and AMG stickers for the blank caps.

still you have to remove the centres anyway.. :D

I must admit your route looks damn easy so I will probably go this route.
I'm watching some Merc caps on the bay, are they 75mm in diameter?

Yes they are indeed (ML CLK SLK SL CL) are all the same centres..
once the cap is drilled out with a hole cutter, the golf or sirocco cap will slide in, you will need 25mm of cap to protrude to cover the grease cap.
That sticks out 35 mm from the hub, but the merc centre cap sits on the wheel so it's less.
