By satnav or speedo ?

Ian

Actually both ! my speedo is amazingly in sink with the sat nav.

Congratulations ... we'll renew this conversation in 6 or 8 months of driving happily at 80mph

I didnt intend it to be a ' look at me aren't I clever ' comment, I was just passing on my experience that my van does sit better at that speed...

this could be due to lots of possibilities one of which could be that at this road speed the engine is right in its peak Horse power range resulting in a happy engine. I dont have a rev counter so dont know the engine speed.

Clearly this may cause a less than happy Police officer . :run

if you fitted a rev counter, oil pressure guage and oil temp guage..I doubt that you would keep 80mph up for long.

but ignorance is bliss.
engine death from high speed cruising.. is spectacular, but quick :D

Over the years we've seen several 'cruise happily at 80' people come and then we've seen them go ..... usually shortly afterwards to Elite or somewhere else for a recon engine.

Good luck. Ian.

Thanks for the advice, as always very welcome.

Once the rest of the refit/rebuild is finished a rev counter + oil gauges will be added . I am quite interested in what revs the engine is doing, from the seat of pants method it feels like around 42000 rpm ( assuming that the engine red lines at 52000 ? ) certainly doesnt feel like its any higher.

Mine will comfortably reach 85 (also a 1.9dg but with about 20k under its belt). However, realistically its screaming its guts out at those kind of speeds. I've found (after much trial and error) that 58mph is about right for long runs and as most lorries seem to sit around that speed, you can tuck in behind one and save a few quid via the slipstream. If its a camper, look seriously at the weight you're carrying. Lots of people drive around with full camping gear when they're not using it and even more contain very heavy chipboard or MDF. I went for much lighter materials and reduced the weight of internal fixtures by around two thirds - that makes a LOT of difference to pulling power.

I guess the point I'm making is that you may be looking in entirely the wrong place for the cause of poor performance.

Do it count that mine will if I want it to? Oh and I don't think elite etc would be much use to me???
