might be a good idea to replace the sensor.they go brittle and fall to bits just when you dont want them to.mine did it on the m6.i looked like one of the red arrows.loads of steam pouring out the rear vents.

mine has just started doing the flashing all the time thing(engine running), if I turn the ignition off and restart the engine it stops, why?

a combination of what myself and sukhoi27 have been saying would be my first guess, failing sensor hardware. You should ALWAYS do a visual check that there really isn't a geniune problem, after which I always suspect sensors. Check the wires are sound & remove the sensor from the tank and give it a good clean (or replace it).

I work in the "control & safety" industry and things like oil rigs are protected by groups of sensors. In the less critical areas they "vote" as even expensive sensors are prone to fail. A 20 year old 50p component is not going to last forever.
