Like post it to me and I could send it back same day all nicely rebuilt,

and dont try it in this wind..the rusty bits will make it hiss as it is and you'll end up drop kicking it over the fence in frustration

you know it only ever blows a gale when you put the mask down

oh aye..when your bridging it ,if it starts to glow too hot ..dont be tempted to try and fill it in faster ..leave it to cool right down then start again or you will drop kick it over the fence and over the road when the muther of all holes appears

E D I T...after another look at it i think that recess is a really nice place for a smear of gun gum.....

easy to weld that welded up a lot lot worse!!!! if not chemical metal it up!

Or for that matter, pick up a s/h three-bolt bike silencer (900cc+) and weld an adaptor that will mate to your exhaust pipe. Only paid £20 for mine on eBay and it'll never rot now. Surely thats the easiest and cheapest way out. Last a lot longer than a stock silencer.

I think mine has a side entry and end exit ? If so then they are £50 ( ebay delivered)

I asked both of the ebay sellers that advertise diesel lt exhausts Mark, and they reckoned that they didn't have anything that would be suitable, but that diesel exhaust does look very similar.

I'd really like to have a go at it myself, but will see what it looks like once I've been at it with the wire brush.

It'll need a big sturdy tailpipe on it though (approx 24"):

Depends where you position it in the first place.

I have speent best part of my motoring career learning to transform bodgeing into engineering solutions and to be frank that box is going to need replacing soon anyway. If you must weld it you will find the best tool for getting back to god metal is a finger file just like the one that B&Q don't stock any more. (Half inch belt sander tool) You could make a kidney bowl shaped bit of 16SWG steel with holes round the edge, hold it in position to mark out self tapper pilots and screw it on with a big dob of eahaust putty under it. Like I said i growd out of bodging but thats one I have used before.
( my first "camper" van was a Fordson woden bodied shootng brake with an 1,100 cc sidevalve engine and rod operated brakes but since have worked my way up? to a T25....

Started cleaning-up the silencer today and noticed that on the opposite end somebody had already done some welding but it's gonna need a bit more because its started to hole in the same place. The heat shield looks like its been cut off and put on upside down?


Then I noticed another hole behind this heat shield. Looks like the brackets that support the silencer at that end have been moved for some reason. I cut the heat shield off to get at the hole behind it




The part number for the silencer is on a plate which looks like its been welded onto the silencer, which seems a bit odd?


All cleaned-up and ready to go:


I've had a productive day and done all the welding on the silencer now (apart from the heat shield which needs putting on again), so I'm chuffed about that. Haven't taken any pics since I did the welding, but will do that over the wknd. Just a case of waiting to see how long it all lasts for now.
