Hey...have only just logged back in.

Thats an excellent thread, and really helpful for a novice like myself. I'll have the laptop beside the van....as well as £100 odd quid set aside when i inevitably resort to getting a new/refurbished starter
:ok

1985 water cooled 2L I have viewed the Wiki on starting. My van has always been a slightly reluctant starter but has never let me down. Recently it has taken two or three turns of the key to start but sometimes first time.A good battery was tried and also cleaned up solenoid terminal and connection to no avail. On a previous van I had to replace the key mechanism ( the part below the key barrel.) Bosch starter is 8 years old but quite low in mileage
I replaced the key barrel some years ago on this van and have a new lower end mechanism in stock but for life of me cannot remember or see how to remove it. I Have checked that the multipin plugs under the steering wheel housing are fully in. Rather than getting under and removing starter is their a contact at the key end which could get corroded. ? Cannot remember from last time p.s. The top bolt of the starter seems to have an Allen Key head . Is this normal ?
