Right hand drive: only 2100 syncros made. Lhd 50,000
divide 2100 by panel vans, kombis, multivans, single cabs and double cabs and you maybe have approx 300 rhd Dokas ever made. Now that to me is worth an extra shekel or two! Oh, and it's handy having the steering wheel in the right place :)

Sorry but your figures are wrong there were more than 2100 RHD's made. That figure dosent include Aus,SA,Jap,NZ,etc.
OK these parts didnt get sika's doka's or panel vans unless imported later (personally)
I just dont see the point in buying a rusty RHD for the same money or more than a good original LHD. Especially Dokas or Sikas as almost all of these (RHD) vehicles had to earn their keep.
And ive seen a lot of them.

The fact that the steering wheel is actually on the wrong side on a RHD set aside for a minute, on the scale that T3 Syncros were shelled out European or world wide would put a RHD van at a disadvantage. Let me explain, in the present economical climate the pound is doing quite rubbish against the euro and if a european neighbors (not including the Irish contingency here by the way fellas, all five of you) was looking to buy a syncro with his hard earned Euro he/she might want to come across to the UK to get abit more pound for there Euro if you see what i mean, and pay more for an easy to use rather than an pain in the rear to use that nobody has apart from the Brits RHD van. Plus you can put a nice westy interior in a LHD or Multivan interior very easily along with affordable power steering etc plus the LHD's are more, well German really :mrgreen: You can also export to the states and if you were ever to plan a serious trip across North Africa you couldn't do it all in a RHD because they wont let you in. :wink:

It makes total sense what you guys say about value in the broad sense, but I just don't like driving lhd Type 25s. There is something ungainly about them on Uk roads. I have owned four or five Left hookers and they weren't great for daily driving. Probably just me being picky, but a rhd seems perfect as a daily. Both my sika and doka were amazing dailys, even though they were a bit crusty!
Sure, for the same money you could buy a great van like Karl's ex and indeed I have just sold a similar lhd doka just to buy this rhd. I guess it's personal preference, so both sides of the argument will always be pertinent.

Now if a great 16" doka should ever come my way, then I am sure I could bend just a little! :D regards, Matt

Of the 5 of us only Dave drives a RHD van! Like Jed says a LHD van is much more saleable :ok

Well, speaking as a person who has owned & driven both. There are definite advantages to having a RHD in a country that drives on the left......errrmmm that's England (and some small colonies :lol: ). That is why they make RHD, to argue otherwise is just ridiculous.
Sure you, & I, can make do, try to park facing oncoming traffic, hope, that on the odd chance when you can't see a junction properly, that nothing is coming, always park & go into Mcdonalds for your burger, risk, at times, not having a clearer view of road ahead etc etc.....To claim you don't have to make these compromises is, again, ridiculous.

As Jed says for a German to buy a RHD would be a 'pain in the ar$e' to use because he lives in a country that drives on the right, hence they make/like LHD cars.
Most people know this & weighing up the compromising, some will go for the slightly cheaper LHD & put up with it. While others may think of all the little annoyances & in cases the dangers & opt to pay the slightly higher market price. After all, it is the demand that sets the value.
You pay your money & take you chances....simples. :ok

But being serious for a minute, there is a much better choice of LHD vehicles and models and its quite rare to find a RHD in sunnier climates so rust is almost always an issue. Try getting a RHD power steering rack off the shelf! TBH I'd have a RHD Multivan if I could but I cant without major surgery!

how many lhd vans have come from these sunnier climates? not that many i think. i was lucky when i (russle) found my van being rhd. but if it had not come off and a lhd van had come along i would not have rulled it out becouse it was lhd, i have driven jeds vans neather very far and i realy did not see that being lhd was in any real way a disadvantage, and have owned a lhd 1957beetle and a 1967rhd karman ghia, ironicly when i sold these cars the location of the setering wheel had a inpact on the sale of them, a french man bought the beelte and took it back to france, and the karman ghia was bought by the son of an audi dealer from birmingham who wanted a uk (rhd) karmann ghia, becouse it was a uk car cirtianly alloed me to put a the price up and cirtanly helped with the sale. as most of KG in the uk are inported from the usa with the exception of very eary ones the are swedish which are rhd as sweden was like the uk and drove on the left up untill the mid 1950's i think what they swaped to driving on the right as per the rest of main land europe. i guss that border crossings with norway and the north of finland would have been fun to watch.

there are some clear advantages to lhd van, there were designed as to be lhd, so there will be some things that are made to work when it is converted to rhd by the factory, for example, a lhd van accelerater peddel gubblins under the body of the van is much better, it has a nice box to encase it, there is no such thing on a rhd van its all exposed to the eliments on a rhd. there are probobley more but thats all i can think of at the moment

having said all that and being british, and living in england, i still feel that a rhd (uk) adds an eliment of something, but i cant quite put my finger on it may be becouse of th limited number of rhd, (i was of the of the uner standing that about 2100 were produced for world wide ditrobution). russle what sort of number do you recon were made?

i have a RHD sitting in a warehouse so now I know who to sell it to!! Dont think they made Multivans in RHD but is the real set of RHD production figures out there for us to discuss.

As Neil hinted at........ It is yet another myth & half-truth put out by some. Where is this elephant graveyard? Where is this hot, dry, salt-free, state/country where all this rock-solid, uncorroded Lefties are coming from? :?
Truth is that England (& Wales & Ireland) has alot milder winters than all of Northern Europe countries where all these LHD's are imported from.
Thanks to the Gulf-stream, salt on our roads (especially Southern England) is a very rare occurrence. If memory serves, last winter (You remember when we got all that Northern European weather) was the first time they'd salted here this millenium!!
