I have a noisy tappet problem occasionally which also affects performance. I assumed the worst the first time it happened. Then I looked in the Haynes manual. They make it clear that noisy tappets is a common problem with the water boxer engine occurring from time to time and suggest that different oil might help. After driving along at a steady 40 to 50 mph for about twenty minutes the noise ususally goes away for several months. I hope this helps. Patrick :?

Sounds like the same as Rozzo's CU ... that had split an inlet valve guide, the broken piece had migrated into the cylinder and fooked the barrel/piston/rings and it was spewing oil into the exhaust. Sounded like El Alamein at dawn  :run . That was a replace engine job.

No smoke, so no oil getting through the pistons.

I started it just now after a top up of oil and it dosent seem as bad as when it first happened, I am wondering if I should give the old boy a run around the block and see what happens?? :| Local of cource dont what the thing to be stranded !!

Although the noise was diagnosed as big end bearings, I am sure that the tappets are the issue and they have been starved of oil on my my home due to the oil getting hot/thin.......

What should I do, I suppose I could make things worse.... :?:

Quite alright, no problem. Sorry to have interrupted you.
