First pic....... is the vacuum pump,

Second pic....... no thats not the non return valve. that is just a join in the servo pipe.
The non return valve is just below your finger in pic one.

The oil pump is inside the sump.
Only worry about the oil pump if the vacuum pump is not causing vacuum on a cold engine, and even then it could be a multitude of other problems.

thanks rob. i will look at the pump/pipe tomorrow. In the first picture i am pointing at a rather ropey looking bit of connecting pipe -connecting the nice shiny vacuum hose to the pump. will this hose contain the valve - i cant see a separate valve otherwise. i imagine that this is where the vacuum is being lost - either that or the pump is worn. I presume i am ok to run the engine with the hose disconnected to see if it is creating a vacuum?

if it is the pump is that an expensive bit of kit?

if it is the connecting hose is this the specialist hose i have seen referred to on the boards?

thanks for your expertise on this

Yes that ropey bit of pipe joins the servo pipe with the vacuum pump top cover which incorperates the non return valve.
Be carefull as they are easy to break, you can stiill get the tops only from VW if i remember correctly but be carefull.
my advise would be this..........

01: leave van overnight.
02: Before you start the van the next day, remove the servo pipe from the ropey bit then start the van.
03: place your thumb over end of pipe from pump, you should feel considerable vacuum if the pump is working ok .

Follow the pipe down from your hand and you will see it. It has two plastic clamps at either end of it.

many thanks all. i will have a look when i get home tomorrow. given the weather forecast i wont be camping this weekend so i can take my time on this - best to get your brakes working properly.

it is also my first foray into a diesel engine - i have only known the good old A series of old minis (my previous rust bucket of choice until my family grew). it doesnt help that the manual i have only covers petrol engines. what do you think to a wiki page with my finger pointing at various bits and then people identifying them?! could be informative (for me at least) :D

ok - i have a vacuum being created by the pump - so i recon it is that ropey piece of connecting pipe between the long hose and the pump - anyone know what part this is so that i can renew?

The ropey bit is the one way valve. I have just replaced mine 11 quid from JK. My brakes are fine now. The valve has a rubber membrane inside and its this that knackers up. Quite tricky getting the valve off i ended up sticking it in a big cup of red hot water to soften the pipe. Hope this helps. Also when you take the pipe out of the vac pump try sucking and blowing down the valve. You should be able to suck not blow if its working. Mine wouldnt let me do either but other times it would so i changed it anyway and everything is back to normal.
