Hey Karl - I've just aquired our 2nd Scooby Outback (1998 2.5 DOHC with 130k on the clock)
It's got a suspect head gasket (but no oil residue in coolant tank, or steam from exhaust). The engine does run a little lumpy and has a clicking/chuffing sound. I need to have another poke around as it might simply be a hole in the intake somewhere.
I had it delivered on Good Friday and it was £400 including delivery. Found on Ebay.
It's a manual one, so relatively rare....so no flywheel search required for a conversion
I've already swaped all the wheels and a few other bits onto the missus's Auto Outback (she's got a 97 auto 2.5 which is the same colour...and has had it's head gaskets done last year).
I've just got to save up now for all the conversion parts....and most probably an engine overhaul.
Anyone know of any good garages/engine builders in the Bristol/Cardiff area, with Scooby knowledge - where I can leave it in for head gaskets, seals, timing belt etc to be done?
Rich

55 plate is too late for most folks conversions (immobilizer in the instrument cluster = aggro) unless you ditch the engine management and go aftermarket (e.g. simtek) but that will add £1000 to the conversion plus rolling road time...
Cheap Leggy though. That'll buff out. New lamp and good as new

Did you check with rj about immobilizers etc? '98 is getting dangerously late

As Aidan said the issue with later Scoobies is Canbus not the immobiliser. My 2000 model year engine has the immobiliser, so I've simply retained the ignition lock, key (with chip) and RF pickup antenna.

Hi andy and all
I know its a long way but ....................Found a really clean ej25 sohc my2000 in a heavilly rolled forester. Apparantly runs very well. Could probably buy the whole car cheap. Strip it of all parts you need and put it on a pallet. Its a long shot, but I know these motors are becoming rarer and imho the best to fit. Cost to uk??????????????????????? Cost to strip £200.
Even found a ur Quattro here £1500 anyone?
