thanks for the heads up, when you flush through the system these parts are not in the loop, so I can see why they do get blocked.

I had another look this morning and it has broken off what is classed as "distribution pipe" number 16 on the diagram on 3.5 in the haynes manual.

it is a large "plastic/bakelite" component next to the starter motor which has a few pipes going into it, the pipe that has snapped the lug off goes to the heater, I bet you cannot araldite that back together can you. does anyone know where you can get these from?

on the later models it appears that they connect the header to the radiator hose instead of straight onto this, god only knows how it broke off, I know it gets brittle but I must have had the starter wire over it or a rock had bounced up?

No it won't Araldite but not to panic.

I bet Billy739 on here will have spare ones of those ( he breaks T25's for spares ) and I don't think that wierdo pipe affair is a common failure, so he is likely to have them.

I wonder if you will junk all those awful (imho) VW rubber hose clips and replace them with good ole jubilee clips. I know I certainly did

I used to hate the water clips but since I got some long nose molegrips I like them.

they have some on JK for £56 - grrrr not sure they are the same anyway.


The only thing I can think of is that when I removed the engine I hook the starter motor wiring up there, and maybe it was wrapped around it when I put it back on and slowly but surely pulled the pipe and with the engine moving etc put too much pressure on the pipe.

okay an update,

thanks for all your help I got a coolant distributer manifold from VW £34 in total after VAT and me collecting it on my way home. that was £27 cheaper than JK and £16 cheaper than second hand, I think even brickwerks are looking to sell them for £40(ish), make sure you always shop around when you need a new part

fitted the part, bled the water system a few times I may do some more tomorrow just in case there is a tiny bit left

even treated camper to a new set of battery terminals and replaced all the ends joining the battery to connect to the new terminals and changed the "falling to pieces" ring from alternator to starter hopefully that will sort my intermitant charging issues out a bit (and it looks neat and tidy now when I look at the top of the battery), put in some fuel and embarrased my daughter picking her and her friend up from the station, the last run 10 miles around the block engine idling whilst I moved all the stuff back into the back and 25 minute round trip was over an hour, I assume I would have noticed a leak by now as the system would have been well upto pressure.
