MOTs are often subjective. I once put a bug through an MOT and they failed it on the bushes in the Z-bar on the rear axle. This Z-bar theoretically assists with towing a caravan or trailer and isn't on many bugs anyway so I just removed it.
Took it back and he would NOT pass it - really dug his heels in about it. He maintained it was an anti-roll bar (which it isn't). In any event his view was that as it was on there it must work. Not sure now but at the time you couldn't get the bushes for love nor money.
At this point I got really fed up, told him where to stick his MOT tests and took it to another garage up the road and it sailed through.
Incidentally, my T25 has a disc backplate on one side and none on the other and it always passes. If he/she continues to give you a hard time just go elsewhere - it can often be cheaper in the end....

Alot of testers mistake the z bar for an anti roll bar.

Are those crud-deflectors worth replacing? My front discs need doing, is it worth changing these at the same time? Anything else, in that region?

Aren't they really splash guards? To stop the disc surface being totally flooded - think that's how they're described in some places...
N.B. They're not 'thin tin' when new, reasonable gauge and galvanised, not partic cheap either... about £20 +VAT

VW forget to fit them (penny pinched) on alot of the newer cars. Several car makers don't fit them at all.
