I wonder what Mr Baxter has to say on this ?

The fitting of a simple grease nipple mentioned 1/2 way down page 8 seems a good idea.

Yeah you could easily fit the zerks even with the arms in place, just cover your drill and tap with grease to catch the filings. I wonder how well that will lube the whole bushing, though, it's not as if it goes round and round, it only swings in a short arc. But it'd be beter than nothing.

It will be awhile before I have my Syncro on the road to try out my silicone "boots", so wait and see there.

In typical 80-90 fashion this thread has drifted from squeaky fan blowers to squeaky upper wishbone bushes (my fault ) The link to the talk on the Samba forum indicates that replacing the bushes does not effect a reliable "fix" for the squeak. As you likely replace and sell those bushes I wondered if you could shed any of your wisdom on the subject (mine squeak and I would love to cure it)

What did they say in a nutshell?
No doubt if it's on the Samba every man and his dog has chimed in and the topic will be a million pages long, which I don't have the time nor patience for.

I second that. I read pretty much every post regarding squeeky front bushes on the Samba and an hour later was pretty much none the wiser. The only thing I learned was that a 'zerk' is not short for someone who has lost the plot, rather it is a grease nipple (I think, might have my wires crossed...)

With regard to the heater fan, the simple fix suggested above is just what 99% of regular folk need. Those with enough time, patience and dexterity to disassemble a T25 dash will always want to do things the right way, and just don't seem to have the capacity to imagine that anyone else would not want to do the same...

Very true

In a nutshell =

1 = Normal replacement bushes often start to squeak after a few months use.
2 = Expensive ones (from Faber or similar name iirc) might be better designed and are being tried by some, nothing of importance to report yet.
3 = It might be a good idea to drill, tap and fit a simple grease nipple to get fresh grease into the centre of the bush assembly occasionally.

Originals were "Elastmetal" made by Lemforder for VW.
They lasted.
The ones I now sell .... Lemforder.

I did sell Meyle ones, I had about 4 come back with play in them, so I stopped selling them, although I sold hundreds, 4 is too many, funnily enough, all from Syncros.

The bush has a metal case, then a thin nylon sleeve, then rubber then the inner tube.
The squeak you hear is because the nylon has worn through and the rubber is touching the outer casing, the suspension moves and the bush squeaks.
The other ones you are on about are Febi ones, they do not have the nylon sleeve.

Just to add my two pence worth on the subject of squeaking bushes.
A few years back I bought a single cab pick up from Ian @ Syncro Nutz as a work horse hack for a Self Build House Project.
It had the Mother of ALL squeaking suspension that drove you MAD but could not complain as Ian had given me a bargain.
Well in desperation for a QUICK FIX I remembered what a old VW mechanic had told me many moons ago.
With a big syringe I covered all the bushes with OLIVE OIL and to my amazement it never squeaked again.
Not even after years of overloading abuse that poor Wee Truck suffered it never squeaked once...............................

Might try that as a temporary measure, until the spring when I hope to book mine in to Brickwerks for a bit of a front suspension overhaul.

There was talk on the Samba forum that all squeaks from the front suspension are not necessarily from the top wishbone bushes... (Three full stops together (ellipsis, or ‘triple dot’) indicate that a number of words have been omitted).

Would just like to say thanks to Justavan. (ive been trying to track down where i saw this bit of advise for ages)

I tried out the olive oil on my bushes and its worked a treat! Not even a peep out of them since i did it and that was about a couple of months ago now.
