When I picked up my 1.9 water cooled a couple of months ago, the tappets where sooo noisey I honestly thought that I had bought a pup and the engine was f*cked! The previouse owner reasured me that it was usual as she had been standing for a while and that they all did this!!
I wasnt convinced and started the 280 mile trip home very dispondant and sure in my mind that I would have to change the hydrolic tappets, something that I had done lots of times on . .'s.
Anyway bugger me but after 10 or so miles she quitened down, and if i use her once a week she has been fine. since then i have red lots about this problem and the general concensus is " dont worry about it" not easy i admit when it sounds like the engine is about to self destruct! But from what i have read its not as easy a job as on fords, so i would definatly give her a run before buying new tappets.

great news!!!
took her out for a poodle around about 15-20 miles in but when i got back home the tappets had re-adjusted back to normal

i did however notice that i have 15/40w oil and its made by fuchs not morris as i'd thought

so my next question is that when i change the oil whats going to the best for quieting the engine down some more, will that 20/50w work you guys were talking about? and what brand would be best if it matters that is???
cheers guys

15/40 mineral is fine, and change it as often as you can.
